Somali pirates seize ship; 21 Americans aboard

Wrong as usual. The mansions and (probably) the people in them are not responsible for the seizure of the American crew, and bombing them could possibly result in the crew's murder. Of course the life of the crew is at risk, but the solution seems clear. The ship itself must be seized as quickly as possible, the pirates neutralized, and their mother ship sunk. It may take time to get assets into position, but I promise you, they are on the move as we speak.

They aren't pirates in them houses?

Seriously..... you crack me up sometimes.

You guys are missing the point. Who's ship it is is irrelevant.

There are two issues:

1) They're Americans held hostage abroad.
2) This provides Obama with political incentive and capital to take care of a problem that's been ignored previously.

There's a body of international law blocking the Western powers from dealing with the pirating problem effectively. Domestically the more immediate issues of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan makes raising the political will for a decisive action difficult.

This changes everything. A bold strike from Obama would probably be tolerated by the international community (at least the Europeans) even if it didn't fall completely within accepted international protocol, and wouldn't otherwise be popular domestically.

The pirates in the houses are not the pirates who hijacked the ship....duh. Can't you discuss an issue without infantile remarks?

Mmmmmm......Danish.

Anyway, does it really matter where the ship is from? There were Americans captured, we (the US) have to do something to get them back, end of story. Do we pay a ransom and exchange, thus rewarding the pirates for their actions or do we do something more drastic to demonstrate that their actions will come with no reward if they act against our countrymen or property? That's the real issue. Now, I want to be a pirate, so I would say reward them! But I also want to be an old school pirate, the likes of Johnny Depp and the Yo Ho Yo Ho a pirates life for me, in which case I would say blow them out of the water for not being authentic pirates. Though I am torn between the One Piece sort of piracy and the Black Lagoon sort of piracy...maybe they can both be right.

Either way, WTF are they really going to do, even if we pay ransom they have to pick it up and what would stop us from capturing/killing them when we figure out where they are at?

Americans are held hostage, kidnapped, murdered, accused of crimes and held for months and years world wide every day. The US does nothing for them.

Fault? I don't recall implying that Bush invented piracy. It's just one more of many things that were going on during Bush's presidency though that's been handed off to Obama. And now that an American ship has finally been attacked it's on Obama's watch and now he's got to deal with it.
Hmm.

I don't recall implying that Clinton invented terrorism. It's just one more of many things that were going on during Clinton's presidency though that's been handed off to Bush. And now that an American city has finally been attacked it's on Bush's watch and now he's got to deal with it

Right?

Do you want me to argue your "feelings" The ship is flying us colors, that makes it a US ship.

There are 21 Americans captured.

Either of these two are enough to act. Here we have both.,

LOL typical you. You are caught in being totaly clueless and now you sticking to the typical right wing talking points and refusing to debate the reality of the situation.

The ship is Danish pure and simple. The flag of the ship means nothing these days and in fact has not meant anything since the emergency of countries that give "benefits" to ship owners for flying their flag instead of the flag of the owners country. It is all about money.

PeteEU thinks we shouldn't help them. Thanks Pete, for your concern.

So to sum up where we are:

- Petey (clueless as usual) assumed FOX News said something without any actual proof (par for the course with Petey)

- Cardinal blames Bush for this, even though a US ship or a ship with US crewmembers aboard was never attacked during his Presidency

- WillRockwell (the centrist - ha) took a jab at Bush as well, even though a US ship or a ship with US crewmembers aboard was never attacked during his Presidency

- No one seems to have a "firm grasp" of maritime law here and most of what has been posted is "speculated opinion" on what they think it should be based on their own views

Bottom line, US citizens are being held hostage. It doesn't matter what flag was flown on the ship, it doesn't matter who owns the ship, all that matters is that US citizens are being held hostage. Aside from increasing troop strength in Afghanistan and telling Iraq to take control, Obama has done nothing to impress me. As someone else pointed out, he has done nothing in terms of the US journalists that are being held in China and in Iran. This is his chance to act Presidential and do the right thing, but I seriously doubt it will happen.

Update: US crew back in control of ship! I'm sure more details will come to light in the next several hours, but my hat is off to the crew!

Yes... all of which is misdirection and obfuscation, intended to divert attention away from the lack of effective response from The Secular Messiah.

Good news that the ship is back in the hands of the crew.

They heard that the One was going to be really really mad at them, so they freed the hostages.

Pentagon says crew retake US ship from pirates
Apr 8 12:28 PM US/Eastern
By KATHARINE HOURELD
Associated Press Writer
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Pentagon officials said Wednesday that the American crew of a U.S.-flagged cargo ship had retaken control from Somali pirates who hijacked the vessel far off the Horn of Africa.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because information was still preliminary. But they said the hijacked crew had apparently contacted the private company that operates the ship.

At a noon news conference, Maersk Line Ltd. CEO John Reinhart said that the company was working to contact families of the crew.

"Speculation is a dangerous thing when you're in a fluid environment. I will not confirm that the crew has overtaken this ship," he said.

A U.S. official said the crew had retaken control and had one pirate in custody.

The official said the status of the other pirates was unknown but they were reported to "be in the water." The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

:applaud:2dance::yt

I got chills down my spine when I just went onto CNN and saw that headline. YIPPEE! I am so damn proud!

Yep!

It reminds me of the same spirit as that displayed by the passengers of Flight 93 who took a stand against terror.

PeteEU thinks we shouldn't help them. Thanks Pete, for your concern.

No I am saying that the US does not help most of its citizens that get in trouble abroad, so why help this crew? There is no US policy to help any and all US citizens abroad so there is no precedent for helping this crew what so ever.

As usually you cant read. I ASKED if it was from Fox News, did not assume it was Fox News. He must have gotten his false information from somewhere after all.

So who is it that is wrong? Let me guess, its the idiots at Fox News that got it wrong yet again and you believed them right?

You didn't ask, you assumed it was from Fox News. Anyone who read what you typed completely understood that you were assuming. Don't try to be coy Petey, it doesn't suit you.

BTW, Illinois still doesn't border Canada.

Tell me about maritime law then.

The ship is Danish pure and simple. The flag of the ship means nothing these days and in fact has not meant anything since the emergency of countries that give "benefits" to ship owners for flying their flag instead of the flag of the owners country. It is all about money.

American crew, flying the American flag. American ship owned by a danish company.

get over yourself.

What's the detail on how they rid the vermin pirates?
So now, what will the response be. I personally am concerned that Obama will not respond with a firm hand and this will open up more attacks on American ships.

Obama is at a crossroads here with this one. If we pay the ransom, shame on us, shame on him.
