Hamas attempts to use stinger anti-aircraft to shoot down IDF aircrafts

Industry sources said Raytheon, producer of Stinger, installed identification friend/foe capabilities more than a decade ago. The sources said this would prevent Stinger from being fired against any aircraft used by the U.S. military.

Another Hamas source said gunners deployed Stinger along with heavy machine guns in attacks on Israeli helicopters during the war in the Gaza Strip. The source said one Stinger surface-to-air missile was launched, but the projectile veered off course and struck a Hamas gunner squad.
"The Stinger was drawn by the heat of our guns rather than the engines of the Israeli helicopters," the source said. "At that point, we stopped using this weapon."

The sources said Hamas has abandoned plans to acquire additional Stingers. Instead, the Islamic army has been ordering the Russian-origin SA-16, or Igla-1, surface-to-air missile system, with a range of five kilometers.

This just reminds me of that story from a little while ago about that suicide bomber whose vest went off prematurely and he ended up killing himself and four (IIRC) others who were prepping him. Is it technically even possible for guns to heat up enough to attract a Stinger? I have no idea what limits there are set so that it doesn't just go off after the lighter the guy up the field is using instead of the chopper or fighter.

In the real world, politics is compromise and democracy is politics. Anyone who would be a statesman has to be a successful politician first. Also, a leader has to deal with people and nations as they are, not as they should be. As a result, the qualities required for leadership are not necessary those that we would want our children to emulate - unless we wanted them to be leaders.

I love this. Hamas shoots themselves. Keep up the good work, jerks! Raytheon should get a medal for this....PRICELESS.

No, the weapons worked perfectly as designed. This is what happens when these weapons are in the hands of the foe. We should ship them more. j/k

This story is a little sketchy. It seems unlikely that a stinger would veer off its designated target and switch to a smaller heat source on the ground. Considering the source, I suspect that we didn't get a completely accurate picture of what happened. Its a nice story though.
