Have you read the first commandment yet? Christianity and Freedom of Religion are simply incompatible. And what does Christ not going around slashing people say about Christians? Christ was a Jew. He wasn't a Christian. Christians who believed in the message of Christ, the Jew, most certainly went around converting people by the sword.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. - MLK

They're not incompatible. In order to be a Christian you must subscribe to the First Commandment, but nowhere does it say to force others to do so. I would say that those who attempt to convert others by force are not even Christians, but hypocrites.

Bulletwound is entirely correct. The Gospel presents Christianity as a choice that is made by each individual. Conversion by force would remove that choice, and IMO without choice there is no faith, only hypocracy.

The fact that some rulers in history have used Christianity as an excuse to engage in conquest does not make forced conversion a Christian principle.

‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’
    —Matthew 22:34-40

Those people converting those with swords were violating the second commandment, as said by Jesus in Matthew.

If Jesus were to be strolling in America today he'd probably vomit on a regular basis to see how his Sacrifice has been exploited and mangled to support nearly everything he taught against and gave his life for.
You know, he is right. America is not a Christian nation.

Which Christian 'ideals' are these people are talking about? Freedom of religion? Freedom of speech? Which 'ideals' upon which our country was founded on is 'Christian' in nature? We can debate all we want about what they might have been thinking but at the end of the day they wrote the one piece of information that destroys any assertion that we're a 'Christian nation'(1st amendment) by ignoring the most basic of Christian tenets(1st commandment).
Much of the morality that went into the founding of this country was based on the morality that the founding fathers, as Christians, practiced. They did not create an anarchic society. Most laws are based on some sort of morality. Since Christianity was the main repository for morals of the day, it stands to reason that this is where many of the tenets that our country was build would come from.

Easy. Christians follow the teachings of Christ and try to live our lives following the example that Christ taught.
"Christians" are like the Pharisees. They pretend to worship Jesus Christ, but yet, they worhsip in such a way that "men can see their worship". It is not sincere and generally involves a right-wing political agenda unrelated to what Christ taught.

Ego has nothing to do with it. What it has to to with is respecting the principles that Christ taught rather than using his name to promote an agenda.

The majority of Christians hardly know anything about their faith and do not even attempt to emulate Christ. I would not want to be labeled a Christian, and I have a profound appreciation for Jesus.
