Deputies: Anthrax Hoax Meant To Be April Fool's Prank

it was an April Fool's prank: randomly placing envelopes containing a white powder on dozens of vehicles in a hospital parking lot and in mailboxes in his own neighborhood and beyond...

...Moffitt was being held today on 79 counts of possession of a hoax weapon of mass destruction, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said. Each charge carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years. His bail was set at $790,000 on those charges.

Now granted, this was not the brightest of April Fools day jokes, and he likely scared the **** out of plenty of people, but 79 counts at up to 15 years each?? This just seems excessive, this guy has the potential to spend the rest of his life in jail because of an ill thought out prank??

Maybe that's a bit excessive, but he should definitely be sent to prison for at least several years. 5-10 years seems appropriate to me.

He's an idiot and he should have known exactly the type of reaction this would cause. He probably cost the city a lot of time and money investigating this. It's just not wise to let people get away with this type of crap because they say they're only kidding.

Yeah, I do agree he need to face some ramifications for what he did, to was a stupid and costly prank, one that freaked out a lot of people. It is just a shock to see the magnitude of the penalties he may be facing for his stupidity and poor judgment. Granted the laws are on the books, and the charges are what they are, but this is clearly a case where the severity of the potential sentence is way disproportionate to the actual crime itself.

It is in the hands of the prosecutor and the courts now, so it remains to be seen what the outcome is, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the prosecution may not yield much leeway here. It would be nice to see some sort of reduction on sentencing and charges for him, but this is Florida, so I won't be expecting this outcome. A few years would do him good and be fitting, but what he is facing is just ridiculous for a prank, idiotic or not.
