UN to respond to Korea Rocket launch at emergency meeting

Now is the best time for Americas enemies and competitors to make a move.

Competitors? What competitors? All the nations of the world are going to join together and sing "Kumbaya." This is the Obama way. We have nothing to be concerned about.

Obama needs to expedite our exit from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Exactly. Dont worry though, us Euros will send you a couple of tanks and about 30 men to protect uncle sam in the name of NATO and freedom.
We don't need your puny tanks and girly-men to protect us.

Germany's tank manufacturing tradition is long and well respected. They make the barrels for the M1 Abrams.

Depends on the conflict... We could use any help we could get if we're forced into yet another war in the near future.

We have had help, but it has been at much of a level. We're usually alone relatively speaking.

Actually yes. In the past week over 20 people have died because of crazy people with assault rifles!
I see that the propaganda has worked.
None of the shooters had an assault rifle.

We are in more danger from crazy gunman with assault rifles, then a nuclear north Korea.
This is unsupportable.

It is if you're the one being oppressed by them.

I dont need to be opressed by them to agree or disagree with the fact that 60 years isnt much to go on. Democracies survive much longer then these shameful regimes.

They need us more then we need them nowadays Dave, that "we dont need European armed forces" talk is coming from a overly proud American that is blinded by his own patriotism. If this was the case they wouldnt be in NATO, or whining at us to fight a war we didnt start at every goddamn summit that involves the US that we are in also.

Ontop of that they have the balls to question the legitemacy of our forces. There was a time a European nation threatened the very existence of the American state aswell as others. On a general scale, our forces are no less capable then yours, especially when you look at the European army on a whole.

We'd better be pulling brittish forces out of Afganistan then.

Hope not!

I for one appreciate all the Britt's...

I am not a self delusioned ego-maniac like a couple others here

Most NATO(EU as well) nations are involved in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of them UK, Netherlands, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, etc send reasonable numbers of troops that are used in both peacekeeping and active combat operations.

Problem is a minority of nations (France, Germany being the two big ones) send some troops but not enough and then restrict their usage to non-combat. They should risk expulsion.

Any European nation(NATO member) who does not meet its commitments to Afghanistan especially by allowing it troops to be used in combat should face expulsion from NATO.

NATO invoked Article 5 in response to 9/11. That action declared NATO at war with the Taliban and al Qaeda. SO its past time all member states fight the war they started or deemed fit to fight.

I'm not sure why we are talking about Afghanistan, but anyway...

The UN lacks the teeth to do anything against North Korea as long as China and Russia are opposed. Once again, the Security Council veto prevents any meaningful action. Likewise, there is no point in sanctioning NK further, since they are already at the lowest possible levels. The only thing they are now receiving from China is food and clothing. Their only domestic sources of electricity are outdated river dams, and China agrees to provide them with minimal fuel to power railroads that deliver food to outlying areas. They really don't have much else that we can take away, and the government there lives comfortably enough that they don't care how much their people suffer.

Even though NK violated UN law, I honestly don't think it poses a big threat to the world. Its technological prowice is relatively inept. It lacks the scientific and financial resources to develop any kind of meaningful weapons program that could pose a threat to the rest of Asia. Frankly, I don't believe China would sit by idly and let NK threaten neighbours that are an economic asset to the government in Beijing.

The biggest danger is to South Korea. I think the north is rapidly running out of options for survival, and it will either end up reunifying with the south, or invading. I think they will select whichever option they believe allows them to save face. JMO, but I think all the saber rattling is a way for them to begin to open the door for reunification talks and have a stronger negotiating position, rather than appearing as a beggar at the door.

You're right, that is a distinct possibility. I think invasion would be a last resort though, and it would be interesting to see which side China would choose. China is benefitting much more economically from its relationship with South Korea than it is with its thrifty Northern ally.

Yeah, Obama is much too concerned with social programs and destroying the free market to worry about essential government functions like defending our country and our allies...

Edit: Also, note that I am also opposed to opening a third front. Our military's not even designed for it and now is hardly the ideal time.
Afterall, he's a community organizers.

They need us more then we need them nowadays Dave, that "we don’t need European armed forces" talk is coming from a overly proud American that is blinded by his own patriotism. If this was the case they wouldn’t be in NATO, or whining at us to fight a war we didn’t start at every goddamn summit that involves the US that we are in also.
That’s a good question.
Today, what purpose -does- NATO serve, and what would the US lose by not being a part of it?
Further, if the US were not part of NATO, how effective would NATO be (given the purpose it serves, noted above)?

On top of that they have the balls to question the legitimacy of our forces.
With the notable exception of the UK, that question is legitimate. There's been little to support the notion of a European nation having a significant, effective, large scale military force.

On a general scale, our forces are no less capable then yours...
On paper. In reality, the US has FAR more operational/combat experience than any other large-scale military in the world. This is a substantial advantage.

I recall in 1991, before and during Desert Storm, the UK was only able to scrape together a single brigade of operational Challengers, and the French armored contingent was thought of so highly that it was given the role of protecting the US left, where there were no Iraqis.

This doesn’t in any way question the professionalism of these armies or the people in them, just the claim as to their operational effectiveness.

Lol Cherokee your a legend.
Unfortunately our globalized world is dictated around PC policies, so the best chance of this happen is like zero.

I say Fook the world and its PC bull****!.......;)

Its about time we stood up to these fooking retards like Americans of days gone past. We are so fooking concerned about what people thinks about us it makes me fooking sick. We are turning into a Nation of ******s.

Some people just need to be taken off the face of the Earth.

Wow, this really is an emergency. The UN held an emergency meeting 4 days ago. The US & EU have demanded a strong response.

We're still waiting for the emergency press conference to announce the course of action that the UN plans in response to this emergency. :doh

Hehehe...Hahaha...Hohohoho. My side hurts now.

Because we are now the Community Organization of the United States, and the community organizing administration has taken over the White House and our International policy who plan to hand over our security to the UN, expect NOTHING to come of this issue.

The most useless and feckless organization in the world today is the United Nations. Russia and China will of course do what they always do to support rogue nations that are convenient to their obstructionism against the world and veto any sanctions.

Yes folks, I am feeling so much better knowing that the UN will now be even MORE feckless and involved in endless wasteful negotiations with despots, tyrants, terrorists and dictators. I am sure if they embrace the policy of the community organization of the United States and hug these despots, explain to them that they just want to listen to their grievances and require NO preconditions to any talks, these despots, tyrants, terrorists and dictators will suddenly lay down their arms and stop their attempts to disrupt the world with their inhuman actions and embrace Democracy and human rights.

Carry on! :2wave:

Of course not. Thats why your members of NATO

Actually, NATO was more about Europe's protection. And since Europe doesn't need protected from the big bad Russian anymore, what's the point of NATO? Until Afghanistan, NATO was never a factor for anything. And with Afghanistan, we are witness to the bare minimum.

All the world showed up for the Gulf War and the majority did nothing. America and Britian bore the burden. All the world showed up for Somalia and the majority behaved horribly. America bore the burden. And Bosnia? Once again, American powers led the way and conducted the majority oof the missions. Kosovo? American sorties made up over 65 percent of the effort. And of course when it comes to America's protection after 9/11, the rest simply groan at having to help or to even show up.

So what we have here after 19 years since the end of the Cold War, is a very good guage to determine who the beast of burden is and who simply seeks ways to take advantage while getting away with the bare minimum.

From an international effort against an invading tyrant, a UN humanitarian mission in Africa, a genocidal issue in Europe, and America's very defense, we all know, whether we acknowledge it or not, that America can depend on itself and the Birts. No one else. And that any international "cooperation" involved is only about showing face, but not really seeking to play a part.

This was true before the Berlin Wall came down and this is true today. NATO was always about Europe. Not America.
