Colo. Dems expedite illegals tuition billA proposal to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants passed out of a Colorado state Senate committee this week after Democrats moved up a vote on the bill to coincide with a Republican opponent's absence from the state on a family emergency.

Republican state Sen. Ted Harvey's father-in-law has Alzheimer's disease and his health began deteriorating so rapidly early this week that Mr. Harvey was forced to take a few days off to transport the ailing man from Florida to Colorado.

Even so, Mr. Harvey had planned to return to the state legislature in time for Friday's Appropriations Committee vote on Senate Bill 170, the in-state tuition bill. He had also planned to vote against it, which would have resulted in a 5-5 tie that would have killed the legislation.

Instead, the committee's Democratic chairman, state Sen. Abel Tapia, seized the opportunity and rescheduled the vote for Wednesday. Without Mr. Harvey, the bill passed 5-4 and now heads to the Senate floor.

Other Republicans on the Appropriations Committee tried to stop the early vote, but were stymied by Democrats. Mr. Tapia said later that the vote was rescheduled so that the committee could clear its backlog of bills.

The bill's sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Chris Romer, son of former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer, argued that there was no reason to wait until Friday because the Appropriations Committee is charged only with weighing the legislation's fiscal impact.

Democrats have argued that the bill would have a positive effect on the state budget because more students would be attending state universities and thus paying tuition. Republicans counter that the state will lose money because those students would ordinarily be paying the higher out-of-state tuition rate.

Typical Democrat maneuver.

Can anyone explain why, in this time of national fiscal crisis, we need to pay to educate illegal aliens, when we should be arresting their butts and hurling them across the border?

Maybe because smarter people get the most out of their Welfare checks.

Yes, let's not further educate the children of illegal immigrants. They should be forced to have a sub-par education and work harder to achieve success or be deported for their parents decision to bring them into America illegal.

Also let's not mention that this bill only gives a tuition discount and would bring additional revenue to the state by allowing more financially strapped families to afford state university tuition.

One of the real problems, honestly, is that we control our State government usually rather well especially when it comes to things like funding and spending. So we're really looking at right now how much we have to cut from University spending and funding and then the Dems come out and try to pass a hugely unpopular bill that can only hurt our higher education. It's mindboggling.

read the friggin' story.

It ain't "children of invaders", it's "invaders".

They should be forced to have a sub-par education and work harder to achieve success or be deported for their parents decision to bring them into America illegal.

Yes, anchor babies should be kicked out on their rears, no question about that.

what's that got to do with the fact that ILLEGAL aliens are being given free taxpayer rides by the Democrats?

Also let's not mention that this bill only gives a tuition discount and would bring additional revenue to the state by allowing more financially strapped families to afford state university tuition.

Yes, lets not mention that a tuition discount is a monetary gift. Avoid mentioning that at all costs.

Here's another thing...it isn't bringing "additional state revenue"...if the invader wasn't in the state, he couldn't be consuming state resources in the first place.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have access...but we're talking about cutting 300 million dollars from our higher education budget here...that would decimate many of the Colorado schools. I had to pay out of state for a few years till I got CO citizenship, why not hold similar standards to others? Plus, if that 300 cut goes through some places like CSU will be given license to raise their tuition...something regularly well guarded against. People in the state do not want this bill passed, the government should listen to us. We're not saying no school, but we're saying pay out of state like everyone else.

You mean not throwing money at people who aren't supposed to be attending US schools is going to bankrupt the schools, who won't have to spend any money educating the people who aren't there because they're not supposed to be there?

And....gee...some schools might have to raise their tuition so the students who attend them might have to pay more of their fair share of the costs of their education....so? If they don't want to pay for their education, it's not like they have to go, do they?

read the friggin' story.

That article states that to qualfiy for the tuition discount they must have attended at least 3 years at a high school in the state. A 15 year old isn't an invader, that is a child of an invader.

Giving tuition discounts isn't a "free ride". They still have to qualify to be accepted to the school and pay the rest of the tuition.

Stopping people from entering the country is a whole other topic. This is about what we do with the one's already here.

Is it worth spending $300 million if the return is $500 million in tuition fees and a few hundred million or possibly billion added to the economy with educated legal workers that would have normally been forced to work crap jobs illegally due to their lack of education?

He'll be 18 when he goes to college, and have already made the adult choice to violate this nation's immigration and entry laws.

That makes him an invader.

It's a free ride. What did they do to earn that discount? Oh, that's right, they simply had to break the law.

No. Making sure the people that break the laws to get into this country don't get free rides from the government is a major step in discouraging them from breaking the law.

One of the first steps for being enrolled in a public school, at any level including college, should be to prove one's presence in this country is legal. That should be right there on all the financial aid forms and admission applications for the colleges.

And it should be a felony to lie on those forms.

What part of "illegal" did you fail to understand?

Just think how you could shrink Colorado's budget if your state would start weeding out the illegals and making them unwelcome, or at least unfunded.

I am so glad my state signed the tax payer protection act aka HB 1804.It basically stopped giving illegals tuition in my state. What was funny about that bill is that the same governor who approved of free college money and in-state tuition to illegals is the same one who signed HB1804 into law.

I'm far more disgusted by the way the vote was scheduled than by the outcome.

Do you have a source for those numbers, or did you just make them up on the spot because they sounded nice?

Because whether you like it or not, most of them are going to be living in this country for the rest of their lives. I'd rather that they get good educations and become productive members of society, some of whom will go on to create jobs for Americans. You seem to prefer that they remain uneducated, and join drug-running gangs or live on welfare. Why is that?

I thought they sounded pretty nice. :2wave:

I am actually curious though what the ROI is. If it's not substantial then it's definitely not worth it.

They're not increasing the number of spots that the university will have, they're just shifting the burden of paying for them from the students to the taxpayers.

By that logic, the result of passing this bill will be a bunch of uneducated Coloradans on welfare and running drugs.

Then presumably those seats will be need-blind, and the university will admit the students it feels are the best fit. That's a good thing, right?

If there are more people who want to go to a university, then they can establish another university. Or they can select from a broader talent pool, instead of selecting only people with the good fortune of being born north of the border.

Admission is already need-blind. The only thing this is doing is just allowing illegal immigrants who would otherwise have had to pay out of state tuition to save money. If they want to establish another school or increase the number of students, nothing is stopping them from doing that.
