The Associated Press: Sebelius admits errors, pays $7,000 in back taxes

To preempt what I'm sure will be a dozen threads on this topic:

Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius recently corrected three years of tax returns and paid more than $7,000 in back taxes after finding "unintentional errors" — the latest tax troubles for an Obama administration nominee. The Kansas governor explained the changes to senators in a letter dated Tuesday that the administration released. She said they involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home and business expenses.

Sebelius said she filed the amended returns as soon as the errors were discovered by an accountant she hired to scrub her taxes in preparation for her confirmation hearings. She and her husband, Gary, a federal magistrate judge in Kansas, paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest to amend returns from 2005-2007.

BUT:
In her letter to Baucus and Grassley, Sebelius wrote that the accountant discovered these errors:

_Charitable contributions over $250 are supposed to include an acknowledgment letter from the charity in order for a deduction to be taken. Out of 49 charitable contributions made, three letters couldn't be found.

_Sebelius and her husband took deductions for mortgage interest that they weren't entitled to. The couple sold their home in 2006 for less than what they owed on the mortgage. They continued to make payments on the mortgage, including interest. But since they no longer owned the home they weren't entitled to take deductions for the interest. The same thing happened with a home improvement loan. Sebelius said they "mistakenly believed" the payments were still deductible.

_Insufficient documentation was found for some business expense deductions.

Those sound insanely minor. So let's have an el oh el and move on.

I agree that these are minor. It really isn't as big a deal as past nominees Obama has put forth.

Bottom line:

We have Obama Cabinet members, the brilliant folks... that cannot figure out how to fill in their tax forms.

This will have all manner of people gouge their taxes; and the defense will be Geithner, Sebelius, Rangel, Daschle etc. cannot figure out how to pay their fair share... even with the aid of accountants...

... how do you expect me to?

If Daschle, Rangel and Geithener are not fined or punished... don't even think of it in my case. I made an honest mistake.

It'll be called the Obama Administration defense tactic.

.

It shows poor judgement on Obama's part. He keeps appointing people with character issues, they're tax cheats.

All of his appointments either run & hide to avoid public humiliation because of their shady dealings, or they openly accept the nomination and flaunt their nefarious deeds as the democratic leadership downplays their crimes through their liberal media minions.

Less than 3 months into this administration, and most people are already impervious to the fact that Obama is surrounded by his closest crook friends.

Here's my partisan take on the shenanigans of Liberal Democrat Politicians, although I believe Sebelius may be one of the more intelligent Liberals;

Thank Gawd they are now being nominated for higher office so that they can now come clean and correct all their tax forms. Maybe we should nominate EVERYONE in the Democrat Party for a position in Obama's administration; the additional revenue may balance the Federal Budget! :rofl

The thing that I find fascinating is that these people who appear incapable of getting their taxes correct until they are nominated for higher office, are the ones Americans expect to be SMART enough to save the Planet and the Global economy.

It is comedic yet tragic that Americans can be some dumb as to vote for Liberal Democrats to further run the Government into bankruptcy.

I'm sorry, but regardless of political party, if someone cannot even do something as simple as ascertain their taxes have been properly paid and choose NOT to until they are nominated for a higher office, I don't want them involved in Government affairs.

It's almost as bad as a Presidential candidate who doesn't know how many houses he actually owns or a VP candidate who doesn't know which newspapers she reads daily.

Just plain sillyness!

:rofl

But to top those, how about a President who doesn't know how many states comprise the United States of America? Oh wait, that makes yours pale in comparison - my bad.

What a trite yet nonsensical argument; are you desperately attempting to suggest that not paying your taxes is the same as not knowing how many houses you own off the top of your head or what papers one reads?

If she were the standout among Dear Leader's cabinet picks, I would agree with you.

It's harder to ignore now, simply because of the ones that came ahead of her--the only reason she's filing amended returns is because of her nomination, just as was the case with Geithner, Daschle, et al. That's not a display of integrity, that's a display of ambition.

By now simply assuming whomever he appoints is going to have tax and/or criminal problems is the way to go.

Partisan or not, there's no need to be sorry. You hit it out of the park with this post.

Perhaps Obama should put a TurboTax download link on his website.
