North Korea to try U.S. journalists as launch nears

North Korea to try U.S. journalists as launch nears

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Tuesday it would put on trial two U.S. journalists arrested this month on its border with China, stoking tensions with Washington ahead of a planned rocket launch that has already alarmed the region.

The reclusive state accused the two women reporters, Laura Ling and Euna Lee from the U.S.-based media outlet Current TV, of unspecified "hostile acts."

Pyongyang's announcement comes just days before North Korea plans to put what it says is a satellite into space but which Washington and others say will be a test of a long-range missile that could carry a warhead as far as U.S. territory.

They've also kidnapped a South Korean factory worker on similar charges. Is there any doubt in anybody's mind that these three are essentially being held hostage? Why isn't this being covered by the mainstream media?

North Korean Judge:"How do you plead"?
    Defendants: "Not Guilty".
Judge: "Guilty"! "Take them out and shoot them".
    It's nothing more than X's and O's.

Ha. They'll probably release them - but after the missile test(s) (there are reports that they're planning to test other missiles in a repeat of the 2006 "incident"). They're going to use these hostages as leverage.

terrorism: the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.

The North Korea regime can be considered "state terrorists." How much longer is the civilized world going to put up with this crap?

As long as NK isn't attacking anything or enslaving anyone that matters to us.

Oh... and as long as China is their ally.

For the record though, China has spoken out against this "satellite" launch. We'll see what happens when NK defies its only supply line.

They're enslaving their own people. Their constant threats are what's keeping them alive.

Shooting down the missile is an "act of war."

Going to the Security Council is an "act of war."

Joining the Proliferation Security Initiative is an "act of war."

Holding joint exercises is an "act of war."

Their very existence is premised on the fact that they've got thousands of guns pointed at SK and they've threated to reduce Seoul to ashes.

Now they're holding American journalists and a South Korean worker hostage as diplomatic leverage.

Their actions are going to lead to Japan scrapping their limits on the military and going nuclear. Japan has a legitimate interest in protecting their people from the lunatics in Pyongyang.

China better step up to the plate. The DPRK is a blemish on the the world.

The real horror of North Korea is internal in the living conditions of the impoverished and the brain washing of an entire nation. I'll never grasp any one person or body of persons agreeing to enslave a population. How is it "better" to do this than to offer freedom?

What makes it all the worse is that Kim Jong-Il enjoys the advantages of Western Civilization. He gets to drive a car, he enjoys American films, he chats on his cell phone.

There are two types of people in this world: those cherish their own personal freedom and want to share it with the world and those who cherish their own personal freedom and long to be tyrants.
