The Prime Minister admitted the centuries-old laws, which give men a greater claim to the throne than their older sisters and prevent those in the line of succession from marrying Catholics, are a source of controversy.

But he said the public expects such prejudice to be removed in the 21st century, and insisted the historic moves would not affect the position of the monarchy or lead to the disestablishment of the Church of England.

Nice to see a move to reverse the anti-Catholic bigotry that has been rife in English-speaking countries for centuries. It is only a step, but a welcome one.

Like there weren't two involved in this Tango.

If Camilla is a Catholic; I'll cry in my pillow. The Witch can sit on the throne now?

Brown has bigger issues than a stupid law ... leave it be

Camillia is a whore who bumped uglies with a married monarch. If she sits on the thrown, England will be disgraced.

I'd sooner vote for a republic than allow her on the throne with the title Queen. Abdicate, Charles. Abdicate.
No one wants you or your ugly whore on the throne

I have heard that Charles has been repeatedly been asked to step aside and allow William to assume the thrown.

He has reportedly, and Charles has refused.
The Queen has refused to step down to Charles as well saying it is a 'job for life'
Bless her, I hope she outlives Charles

Personally since the King/Queen of England is only there to look good for the cameras nowadays, im glad that Catholics/ and gender equality for the the throne will be taken on board.

If only we had a hot queen. :(

So, it is ok to leave in place an outdated, BIGOTED law? It needs to go.

I'm sorry Ludahai, but priorities.
Catholics can wait until the PM is not so busy with this downturn can they not? They have waited hundreds of years no?

And i must say, i want this abolished after William is on the throne.

Meh, Kate Middleton is okay I suppose. Prince Philip will have a fit coz shes a commoner lol lol. Don't think it will last.

Look on the brightside, if/when Prince charles is King he can't give his crappy opinions out in public, the monarch is forbidden to, lest that undermine the democratic system.

I get the feeling that Elizabeth will outlive her son. Perhaps she has found the eternal serum or something and won't share it with anyone.

I think that governments should focus LESS on the SYMPTOMS of the downturn and attack the CAUSES. This would waste far less time. It should not take so much time and effort to rid the Act of Settlement of its bigoted elements. Even the very language in the Act (using "papist" rather than "Catholic) is a bigoted epithet on par with using "Mohammedean" which was once common parlance for Muslim. Also, you should note it ONLY applies to Catholics. Were William to marry a Muslim, that would be ok - but a Catholic, and he would lose his right to inherit the throne. That is bigoted.

Charles has a ability to not know when to keep his trap shut.
He has already compromised his position as future king as we know his political views and opinions, he ought to abdicate on that basis alone. Let alone his 'baggage'

Oh that racist can go choke on his pipe. I hate Philip. He'll probably drive Kate to her death too, perhaps Diana wasn't enough .... ~:p

A muslim will never sit on the throne.
Anyone who is not Protestant will not sit on the throne.
Anyone who is not part of the elite club will not sit on the throne.
Anyone who is Non white etc ...

Common knowledge

But you can't even MARRY a Catholic and sit on the throne. Lest we remember that Henry VIII formed his own church was so he could get an annulment? The English-speaking world has been bigoted against Catholics for centuries. While this wouldn't end it, it would be a very important symbolic statement that such bigoty is waning.

What bigotry inside England? We have little against Catholics.

Well i happen to think Henry unbeknown to him did something great. The catholic church was too powerful

I think it's time England had a black queen.

I said in the English-speaking world - and there is definately bigotry against Catholics in England (as there is in the USA) though in both cases it is not nearly as pronounced as it once was.

The Act of Settlement of 1701 is still a symbol of the bigotry that was once rife in England and it needs to be eliminated.

As for the power of the Catholic Church, that is and was always overstated. Rome never had much power over England and the unifying force of the Church provided significant benefits to Europes during the darkest parts of its post-Roman history.

I think I could make a case that having a Monarch is pretty much outdated, however you choose to decide the line of succession.

But there's something to be said for tradition, no?
