Gordon Brown pledges to end 'discrimination' in Royal succession

I think I could make a case that having a Monarch is pretty much outdated, however you choose to decide the line of succession.

But there's something to be said for tradition, no?

:2wave:

OK with tradition, NOT ok with officially sanctioned bigotry.

The Queen is the head of the Church of England, which is not even Catholic. It makes no sense to allow Catholics to be put in line for that position.

Reducing the discrimination against women in the succession process does make a lot more sense though.

The rule does not even allow one who has MARRIED a someone who follows the "papist religion" to ascend to the throne. It doesn't say anything about other Protestants or non-Christians. Only "papists".

I don't understand why this requires legislation from the outside. The royal family is still a family with its own internal politics. Why should the government tell them who can and can't marry into the line of succession? Maybe back when the royal family had some real power in the world, I would understand... but they're just figureheads now.

Because only the Parliament can amend/alter the 1701 document that put the present rules in place.

Which was under the rule of the royal family... so, in any case, it was royal family's initiative that started it. I think if they are in favour of abolishing the rule now, then they should let parliament know that they are okay with it... but the decision should not be forced down their throats. It's still their family after all.

It's really quite mind-boggling to me that anyone believes arcane rules concerning who may or may not place a crown on her head and scepter in her hand have any bearing on modern day ideas of 'discrimination.'

Catholic? Protestant? Male? Female?

Really, what on earth does it matter?

Much ado about nothing.

Huh? We are talking about the Head of State of not only a single country, but of 16. This is HARDLY a family matter.

They don't call the King or Queen the "Defender of the Faith"
Just because its sounds spiffy...

Anyway...

Brown has tried to play Obama in the UK and is flopping hard. His people are tired of the spending and Much Europe just today told him(they will be telling Obama to piss off soonish)) to take his spending plans and go to hell.
So I don't think Brown will be pressing for such a profound reversal as this. In fact if he did it would probably be used to end his government...even if it is likely going down in flames I doubt he's stupid enough to shoot himself in the ass while going down.

Haha, I can't beat her outfit but i reckon i have better hair than her =D

I demand Queen position, crown jewels included in the package
Are you black?

Exactly. A catholic heading a Protestant Church? Huh?
Is the Catholic willing to convert? Why should the Church listen to someone not even of their Church?
It's ridiculous, keep the law in place until the royal family wish to remove it

Sorry ... you were not born a royal ... so you cannot be a royal.

But we are not talking about that. One can't even MARRY a Catholic (and note that the language in the original act is bigoted in the extreme) and rise to the throne. This is 2009, NOT 1701.
