UN rights council passes Islamic resolution on religious defamation

The top U.N. rights body on Thursday passed a resolution proposed by Islamic countries saying it is deeply concerned about the defamation of religions and urging governments to prohibit it.

The European Union said the text was one-sided because it primarily focused on Islam.

The U.N. Human Rights Council, which is dominated by Arab and other Muslim countries, adopted the resolution on a 21-10 vote over the opposition of Europe and Canada.

EU countries, including France, Germany and Britain, voted against. Previously EU diplomats had said they wanted to stop the growing worldwide trend of using religious anti-defamation laws to limit free speech.

The document, which was put forward by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, "expresses deep concern at attempts to identify Islam with terrorism, violence and human rights violations."

Although the text refers frequently to protecting all religions, the only religion specified as being attacked is Islam, to which eight paragraphs refer.

The resolution "notes with deep concern the intensification of the campaign of defamation of religions and the ethnic and religious profiling of Muslim minorities in the aftermath of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001."

The EU said, "International human rights law protects primarily individuals in their exercise of their freedom of religion or belief, not religions or beliefs as such."

Speaking for the EU, Slovenian Ambassador Andrej Logar said the 27-nation body was committed to tolerance, nondiscrimination and freedom of religion. But instead of a one-sided approach, it would be better to engage in dialogue with mutual respect.

The resolution "urges states to take actions to prohibit the dissemination ... of racist and xenophobic ideas" and material that would incite to religious hatred. It also urges states to adopt laws that would protect against hatred and discrimination stemming from religious defamation.

Saudi Arabia said, "Maybe Islam is one of the most obvious victims of aggressions under the pretext of freedom of expression."

Gee, let's all terminate the free expression of ideas, folks. It might hurt Allah's feelings.

I'm certainly not in favor of this for any religion.

In the U.S. Scientology is considered a religion and it is nothing of the sort.
If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.

Islam wants to get into your kitchen to make sure you don't put bacon on those potato skins, and that you're not cooking with alcohol.

They also want to make sure that you wife's hijab is tied on securely and that her burka goes all the way down, a full twelve inches past her feet.

The big question isn't the UN, but what's our madrassas trained president from Kenya going to say about this?

I think the U.N. should pass a resolution that no one in any nation may burn the American flag.

:2wave:

It is a worthless resolution, it does n othing more than URGE countries to do something, not order countries to do it.

There are lots of resolutions that urge countries to do things, but it doesn't force them to.

This is nothing more than PC rhetoric that noone has to follow.

Let's see, since flying planes into our buildings they:

Set off bombs in Bali, London, Madrid, Istanbul to name a few places... We hear no outrage.
Cut off the head of Daniel Pearl, and then add others. We hear no outrage.
Drag burned Americans and then hang them from a bridge. We hear no outrage.
Strike from Mosques, schools, and hospitals. We hear no outrage.
Bomb markets. We hear no outrage.
Rocket Israel from Lebanon and Gaza. We hear no outrage.
Iran calls for Israel to be exterminated. We hear no outrage.

We draw cartoons accurately reflecting the situation... then there is outrage.

I don't see how Democrats can be against such a Resolution.
It sounds like something Pelosi and Frank would write; take out Muslim and insert gay... voila.

The top U.N. rights body on Thursday passed a resolution proposed by Gays saying it is deeply concerned about the defamation of Gays and urging governments to prohibit it.

The European Union said the text was (not) one-sided because it primarily focused on Gays .

The U.N. Human Rights Council, which is dominated by Gay sympathizers , adopted the resolution on a 21-10 vote..

EU countries, including France, Germany and Britain, voted for. Previously EU diplomats had said they wanted to stop the growing worldwide trend of using Gay laws to limit free speech.

The document, which was put forward by the Organization of the Gay Conference, "expresses deep concern at Gays subject to terrorism, violence and human rights violations."

I'm in favor of a motion that urgues nations to tell the people who passed the motion we're discussing to **** off.

YOu were doing ok until you made that idiotic final statement.

Laws should apply equally to all.
When government starts making law for special interest groups... this is what happens.
A destructive precedent is set.

They have a case; if one gets special protections, why not the other?
It's absurd, but absurd gets what it deserves. More of the same from a quarter few are sympathetic to.

How did we get here?
... Libs and their absurd ideas put into law.

Thats a relief to hear

And for you who live in the USA, UK, France, Russia or China it can be a relief to know that for any real action from the UN like sanction, you need a resolution from the security counsel. In that counsel, those countries have vetoing power.

The "Clash of Civilizations."

And now, are people still confused about what the UN is? Grand appeasers of aggression and always prepared to sell out humanity to preserve "stability" and "peace."

Can we take a moment to laugh at this before the Global Left come on thread to applaud the UN......

Saudi Arabia said, "Maybe Islam is one of the most obvious victims of aggressions under the pretext of freedom of expression."

Saudi Arabia said this? Wahhabism anybody? The Shia and other sects of Islam in Saudi Arabia are prohibited from displaying their aspects of Islam publicly. They are prohibited from naming their children certain names because it brings attention to the non-Sunni Arab tribe. In schools, Shia children learn about their heretic religion along side Sunni children.

The Sauds have gone through great lengths to oppress and supress non-Sunni forms of Islam. But here they state that the West's "free expression" is aggressive towards Islam despite the fact that Islam is aggressive and prohibiting onto itself? The victims of Islam are victims because they are denied their freedom of expression by their own religion's prescribers (I believe Islam has developed over the centuries into a religion that demands more loyalty towards a specific tribe rather than to a faith).

But let's entertain the notion that Islam is the victim of free expression. This is false anyway. Christianity has been the butt of the joke in the media for centuries. Perhaps Christianity has just evolved into a religion that doesn't seek to riot over a cartoon or call for the immediate death of individuals who dare write a book against Christianity. Perhaps Christianity has gotten used to and accepted that it thrives in a civilization where religions compete healthily for souls and that it must share the environment with a seperation from state. And that it is this healthy seperation and competition that keeps it honest and without easy corruption as it used to. Perhaps Saudi Arabia should have commented on the immaturity of Islam instead of seeking for a way to declare it a victim of the West's free expressive culture.

In other words, most islamic states are a joke.

Liberal .. conservative ... religious.. non religious ..... smart... dumb... one thing all Americans can agree on is that you can only have our freedom of speech after you pry it from our cold dead hands.... and you had damn well better make sure we are dead, because if not we're gonna make sure you are.

Laws restricting the free speech of our people have a life expectancy of about 5 minutes. This UN resolution is less than useless.
