Obama tries to temper furor over AIG bonuses

AP, WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is trying to dampen a fire he once stoked, urging a more tempered response to public furor over bonuses paid to executives of the publicly rescued insurance giant American International Group.

Obama is virtually certain to use Tuesday's prime-time news conference to continue an effort that began over the weekend: cooling the anti-AIG ferocity, now that it threatens to undermine his efforts to bail out the nation's deeply troubled financial sector.

I really take exception to this. Who's the leader here? Wasn't it Obama himself who was expressing all that righteous indignation just a few short days ago? I admit he had me for a moment on this one...glad some of the board members here set the record straight.

I'm not saying he should be roasted over an open fire, just that these sorts of missteps are serious given the delicate situation we're in. I'd like to continue giving him the benefit of the doubt, but this is some serious backpedalling.

Makes me thankful to be armed with critical thinking skills - and a good reminder to "watch what they do, not what they say".

I said it before, this guy's behavior is as erratic as a manic depressive.
Here we go again... last week it was the tone of indignation, now it's laughs on 60 minutes, take it easy on AIG...

Before it gets too far, we should start graphing these mood swings.

We might find out they are in sync with Michelle's and we may discover... it's PMS... and he's not a man!
He would be not only the first Black, but the world's first Trans-testicles leader!

That would explain a lot.

I share your concerns on the back peddling and constant changes in direction, but we have to remember that this guy has only proven that he is a master campaigner and is enjoying the benefits of his current position.

We have not seen any progress on any of the pre election promises, and only a continuous flow of excuses for needing to raid the treasury, but sadly this is what many had warned of as well.

Fact is that all the discussions on the bonuses is little more than a smoke screen to hide many other more important issues happening simultaneously.

While the average Joe argues over who should or should not receive the bonus etc he is not paying any attention to where the majority of the money was actually going to, just what connections our legislators have had with the recipients of the bailout dollars, why our legislators felt this time of turmoil was perfect for adding on their own billions in the budget and who was actually getting these dollars as well.

There have also been decisions and changes made in how our country pays it debt and is borrowing money from one side to cover borrowed money from the other side of the building in an attempt to "cover" itself that may actually lead to the down fall of our entire monetary system, and destroy the value of our money if it does not work and is timed perfectly.

Judging by the smirks and unrelated answers filled with prepared spin so often seen from our financial leaders in Washington whenever they are questioned etc I really have doubt in their ability to have perfect timing or even a full understanding on what they are actually doing.

Suffice it to say that if we as a nation do not make enough noise to put an end to this insanity things will not be the same as we have enjoyed for much longer.

Ok I will admit we do not really know everything about this guy, and many have endless unanswered questions, but I believe that is the first time I have heard that one.

Obama only tempers what his teleprompter tells him to temper.

He has all the symptoms of someone who is pathological narcistic. Such a person compensates his devalued and injured self with puffery, pomposity and by projecting a false image of majesty and authority. He retreats into a bubble universe of fantasy, in which he is loved, respected and omnipotent.
He's got it made so far.:)

This guy is more obsessed with being in the limelight than performing the tasks that face him as president.

Wow.
Not many, even slightly liberal sound like you.
Did you vote for him?

I'd like someone to ask...

"Why did your administration pressure Congress to remove language that would stop the $165M bonus payments to AIG executives, and did the decision to apply that pressure have anything to do with the over $100k in campaign contributions you took from AIG?"

I'm contemplating creating an "AIG BONUS OH NOES" subforum for all these threads.

Please, people. Consider whether your thread is actually a new story, or whether it's merely a continuation of an ongoing story that would be better served as an addition to an existing thread.

Is it preferred to have one long larger thread, or several smaller more detailed and specific ones (if even possible on some subjects)?

Personally I have tried to avoid starting a new thread if I can find one in some way addressed the same issue. It is not always spot on the exact subject, but seems to be pretty easy finding something close enough.

This is a real question.

Well said, but have you thought about the many potential reasons why he may be doing this instead of spending more time being in the oval office and acting presidential?

I do mean purposes or causes beyond the obvious like it would be a whole lot more interesting and fun flying around the country in Air Force1 just meeting different people.

Things more like separating himself from the really poor decisions being made by his political party, and the many lies being told to the American public almost daily.

Curious if anyone else has given any real thought on what is really going on with this "tour de US"

This is a real question.

If it's a new, specific topic, that's fine. When there are already several threads on the topic, it's just a bit cluttering.

zimmer hates Obama with a passion. Read his posts. It's the same theme throughout all of his posts. *yawn*

I am enjoying your expressions. It tells me how pissed off you are, and I love it!

I don't hate Obama.

I dislike his policies.
I dislike the fact that he got elected without being properly vetted. The Charlie Rose/Brokaw exchange reveals the press ignorance and infatuation in that brief clip.
I dislike his Mommy Dearest dictates to private citizens.
I dislike the fact he could get elected with Ayers, Wright, Rezko as buddies.

I will make fun of him too.
He was portrayed as this brilliant, eloquent mind, and Bush a dunce.
I think comparisons are apt.
You folks had 6 years of unending bashing of Bush.

Obama has only had 60-days.
Relax, it only gets better.
Especially with every trillion and rude proposal.

I don't hate Obama.
He is President.
But in the words of The Secretary of State,
We are Americans and have the right to participate and debate any administration.

I am simply doing my "Patriotic" duty.

Zimmer I believe many share your thoughts above.

I know some take it to an even higher level as well, and I think more have become very skeptical if not deeply concerned for our future with the combination of new laws that are questionable to their being constitutional, and all the billions of our tax dollars that are being paid out for what may be no legal purpose at all.

Also it seems things are changing so fast lately that only a few are able to keep up, and even less seem to be in favor of the changes.
