Obama calls for new start with Iran

    Quote Originally Posted by Article
The United States wants to engage with the people of Iran and end a decades-long strained relationship, U.S. President Barack Obama said in a recorded message on Friday.

The video message, which contained Farsi subtitles, was timed to coincide with the Nowruz festival in Iran. Meaning "new day," the 12-day Nowruz holiday period marks the beginning of spring.

"So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran's leaders," Obama said in the video. "We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community."

The message is an attempt to bypass Iranian government leaders to speak directly to Iranian citizens about the U.S. commitment to work with the country, White House officials said.

"For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained," Obama said in the video message, which was distributed to selected local media outlets and posted online. "But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together."

Washington has been locked in a bitter dispute with Tehran over its nuclear ambitions and support for Islamic groups.

In the video, Obama compliments Iran on its "celebrated culture."

"We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world," the president said.

Obama urged the two countries to resolve their longstanding differences but said that cannot be done unless Iranian officials stop making threats.
As the new President of the U.S. it is wise to take this kind of initiative instead of assuming that past rhetoric still stands, but I'm wondering what Obama will suggest if Iran does continue making threats.

Is it a new start or "overcharge"?

    Naive.
    Foolish.
These people are going to use and abuse Obama like they did Carter.

Now we know what Carter was doing at the White House.

Explaining how to handle the Iranians Carter style.

Maybe Obama will send his good buddy Khalidi as envoy.

On the 1 to 10 MORON SCALE... this is a 9.

    Why?
Because these folks see this as a signal of absolute weakness.

This statement pretty much kills the deal before it even get's started:

Obama urged the two countries to resolve their longstanding differences but said that cannot be done unless Iranian officials stop making threats

I'm sure Iran will be doing a 180 in regard to "wiping Israel off the map", because Obama is bringing a message of hope and change to the discussions.

I'm going out on a limb here, and am predicting that George Mitchell will be the fall guy for an Obama administrations failed middle east policy.

I think Hillary might have been smart enough to get pre conditions on this when signing on as SoS.

President Obama may be talking to the people of Iran, but it's the government of Iran that supports terrorism, that wants to "wipe Ireal off the map" and that's trying to obtain nuclear devices to achieve those goals.

to think that our saying 'Let's talk" will change their goals is the utmost foolishness. In the Middle East, any indication of weakness (and the offer to open negotiations is a sign of weakness) will be taken advantage of. They may agree to talk, but all it will accomplish is to buy them more time to reach their goals.

    Talks are great.

The question is, what is he prepared to do, once they fail?

    He's got video's working.

Perhaps he's got Twitter & Facebook in the works too.

It'll be fun to watch Obama & Ahmadinejad blog back and forth.

    Iran responds:

"Obama has talked of change but has taken no practical measures to address America's past mistakes in Iran. If Mr. Obama takes concrete actions and makes fundamental changes in U.S. foreign policy toward other nations including Iran, the Iranian government and people will not turn their back on him," Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the Iranian state-run English-language Press TV satellite station.

"...has taken no practical measures to address America's past mistakes in Iran?"

    What's he want? Reparations?
If so, The Obama is the guy to give them to him.

Right, this is the Bush admin view, we do whatever our opponents want. Bin Laden says the fight is in Iraq so we better stay and fight... Why do you suppose it's necessary for us to bend over to whatever the wacko's say?

How about we find out before we start talking about how it's just going to fail.
