Missouri report on militias, terrorists draws criticism

Missouri report on militias, terrorists draws criticism

COLUMBIA, Mo. | A new document meant to help Missouri law enforcement agencies identify militia members or domestic terrorists has drawn criticism for some of the warning signs mentioned.

The Feb. 20 report called "The Modern Militia Movement" mentions such red flags as political bumper stickers for third-party candidates, such as U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who ran for president last year; talk of conspiracy theories, such as the plan for a superhighway linking Canada to Mexico; and possession of subversive literature.

Anyone have a link to this document? (Lerxst, maybe you can help) I was listening to Glen Beck this morning and some of the things these idiots mention are asinine.

    Don't tread on me flags
    Being against illegal aliens
Voting for third party canidates (well only libertarian and constitution, green party is ok)

    and on and on.

Re: Missouri report on militias, terrorists draws criticism

I've not seen the report but I'll get it and try to post it up if it's available to the public.

I see two things here, pro and con.

First of all...we should all be concerned that some officers will use these "warning signs" as reason to stop people, dig into their lives, and submit their information to some kind of watch list. I have a serious issue with that. But I cannot predict the future or tell what officers will actually do with this information. Still yet, this is one of those things that is eerily similar to McCarthyism.

Secondly, I get where the MSHP is coming from in that they claim the report is simply a reference for informing their officers to be cognizant of certain signs. Not that any one makes a person a terrorist, but if you stop someone and you see these signs, be aware that many domestic terrorist groups share these views. At least that is what the patrol is trying to present.

I have my own views on the MIAC and how they operate as well as the MSHP's current intel process. I'll keep them to myself and just say "wow, who didn't see something like this coming?"

I'll look for that report. I would really like to read it and see how it is presented to the officers before I render a final verdict on it.

You didn't miss it because it wasn't in there. The focus was on state militias, not terrorism in general. It has a lot of good, accurate information. However...they did a very poor job in stating the fact that many people who are not associated with militias share some of the views stated. Like you, I personally share a few of those views listed.

Nice to know that someone in my state was kind enough to issue a report that now classifies my political views as red flags for domestic terrorism.

As a little background, I have had quite a bit of experience with sovereign citizen members. Wow. Not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. And while they do recognize the Sheriff as the highest authority, that doesn't stop them from going after the Sheriff or his deputies if they right them tickets for no valid registration or license. They will file lien against your property and seriously issue you summons to appear in their common law court. You don't show they will meet and try you in absentia. They'll render a judgment and then file a litany of paperwork in state court to seize your assets. It can be a serious pain in the ass.
