Pope in Africa says church must help the poor

I think the Pope should express support for preventing Aids by endorsing Condoms, he has a massive amount of influence in certain parts of Africa

and if they don't they should pack up and leave africa?

all catholic charities.

As sad as it is Reverend; i have no control over Africa.

Tho i admit i see the Pope as part of the problem and not the solution.
I think Christianity does alot of good in Africa

I think it is more important for some to attack the church than it is to help africa. sad really.

if you think about what he says it makes sense. you hand out condoms, you say, go have sex. then what happens when there are no condoms? do they NOT have sex?

I am not saying don't hand em out, what I am saying is that both arguments have there merits.

I think Christianity does wonders in Africa but one sect is part of the problem. Besides, it's not like i have control over who comes in and out. Especially Charities.

You teach sex should be done within a relationship but enforce and endorse Condom use, alot of Africans take the Bible seriously, it's almost scary to know how many people will not use a condom because a man in a dress said so. It's pathetic and it causes more harm than good. If a sperm don't get to make it to the ovary; who cares? Surely it is a lesser evil than having babies being born with HIV

The Pope needs to get a slap back into reality.

Make sure condoms never ran out, and i already said you teach sex should be done within a relationship but enforce and endorse Condom use

The Pope has influence because you can trust that he means what he says and couldn't care less how "popular" it is.

You may not like what he says, but you can be assured that it is consistent and true, and that is why he has influence.

True, i'll give him consistent that is for sure.

BTW--if you would like respect for your religious beliefs, you might want to reconsider how you address others' religious beliefs.;)

So then they shouldn't be surprised when their ineffectiveness of their actions is criticized. The Catholic Church spending 'vast amount of resources' while at the same time telling people to engage in behavior that poses a great risk(like for example : not using condoms) to their health is a ridiculous contradiction.

In your hatred for the Church, you are ignoring HALF of the equation. The Church is NOT teaching people to engage in risky hehaviour as you like to put. The Church is teaching people to have sex in a way that is consistent with Church teachings and shows respect for the procreation process. This is SAFER than condoms or any other man-made contraption.

I wouldn't use "trust" and "the Pope" in the same sentence but that's just me.

According to this map, the four countries in Africa with the highest AIDS rates are Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, and Swaziland.

What are their Catholic populations?

Zimbabwe: 8.8%
Zambia: 28.2%
Botswana: 4.8%
Swaziland: 5.6%

source

So, how exactly is the Pope's teaching a problem when three of the four worst AIDS problems in Africa are in countries with less than 10% Catholic population?

Because they think raping virgins cures AIDS.

The reality of the situation is NO, it isn't safer. It's like saying abstinence only education prevents Aids and STDs. Look at the statistics, they prove what you are saying is wrong.

People are not going to be abstinent, so for those that choose not to it is better to allow condoms.

But hey, don't let facts get in your way of spreading the gospel

I don't really think it's funny. It's sad. If you think about it, you can see how they could come up with such a belief. They probably know that AIDS comes from having sex. They don't know what AIDS is or what a virus in general is. What is AIDS to them? Evil. Virgins are innocent and good and thus free from AIDS. The correlation between sex, AIDS, and evil is made. Now, I'd imagine that they might believe that they can restore themselves to a state of balance by transmitting the evil they've accumulated through promiscuity by raping a virgin. The virgin comes out 50/50 good/evil and the rapist comes out 50/50 good/evil. Kinda like karma...

Even if this metaphysical representation of AIDS were true, wouldn't this act constitute an act of evil? Absolutely. That's what I don't understand is how they can not think of the victim. Typical rapists...

I would suggest that the best way we can fight the root problem in Africa (ignorance) is by giving them knowledge.

These charities look good:

Home | Books For Africa

One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a low-cost, connected laptop for the world's children's education

Any more suggestions?

You actually believe using condoms is safer than following the teachings of the Church? :rofl

I don't think that's what he meant.

If everyone followed abstinence only education, it would be perfect... but the reality is, few people do. Abstinence only education has not improved the health status of the infected regions in Africa. Condoms serve to mitigate further risk in the face of the reality that people are not listening to abstinence only education.

If you actually follow the teachings of the church, then your risk will be reduced. However, this does not account for people who are already infected by AIDS, choose marriage as their route to sexual activity, and then infect their partners because they do not believe in condom usage. One such illustration has already been provided in this thread.

Catholicism is not the cure to the AIDS epidemic. It never was, and never will be. I support the Church doing other helpful activities in the region, but when it comes to medical and social science, it is simply too primitive.
