Pelosi writes to Justice on saving newspapers

Pelosi writes to Justice on saving newspapers

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, released by Pelosi's office, the San Francisco Democrat asked the department to weigh the public benefit of saving The Chronicle and other papers from closure against the agency's anti-trust mission to guard against anti-competitive behavior.

"We must ensure that our policies enable our news organizations to survive and to engage in the news gathering and analysis that the American people expect," Pelosi wrote.
If they cannot cut it, let them croak.

If they reported news instead of feeding Democrat propaganda, folks might be more inclined to buy them.

Aside from your partisan hackery, I would agree. Unlike our financial system, a local newspaper has no discernible public benefit that couldn't be provided just as easily by plenty of other outlets.

I'm sure that San Francisco has other, smaller newspapers that can fill the void. Or if they don't, I'm sure they will in the near future, now that the Chronicle is gone.

They're all fed in some way or another by AP anyway, except for the local papers. If some of them shutdown it's not like people won't have access to global news. They'll just lack that particular paper's perspective.

There is an inevitability to the continuing closure of Newspapers.
    Progress is the word.
Pelosi (dunderhead that she is) must at some point realize that these Newspapers rely on Advertisements as well as people who are willing to fork out cold hard cash to purchase the paper.
Advertisements are dropping, because people are no longer willing to purchase papers that give slanted opinion of news.
It is far easier for myself (for example) to go to the internet and read several reports of any particular piece of news.
At least that way I am able to obtain a balanced view of a story.

I don't mind being called a partisan, but where is the hackery?
    Please identify.

Warren Buffett and another economist noted there really is only room for one paper to be profitable in most markets.

Read the history of his entry into the Buffalo market.
His court testimony from this experience should be somewhere out there.

    Bingo!

And that's a fear of the left.
Losing the tight leftist buckshot that comes out of these rags.
As people look elsewhere, the shot is dispersed, weakening some of the left's grip on the message.

    That is fear.

I can't wait until computers replace TV's, plug into them so you can choose from hundreds of news stations.

I'm glad these idiots weren't around 80-90 years ago. We'd all still be driving a horse and buggy, since they wouldn't want them going out of business either. Part of a progressive economy is the destruction of old jobs and products, that paves the way for new innovative jobs and products to expand.

If they don't want to adapt to the market let them fail. End of story.

The enlightening part here is that Pelosi believes the answer is Government. That's it guys, 100% in a nut shell, the liberal mindset. SHE believes in this, and the free market has failed an idea she believes in, thus only "government" can save the paper.

Producing a quality product people want to purchase, and advertisers want to spend money on? Screw that jazz! That's the "old way", tax payers and government power can keep this thing going!
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

Perhaps Ms. Pelosi should work more on getting her party's constituents to actually READ the paper, since most of them couldn't name the secretary of state or point out Ohio on a map.
