My Way News - White House says economy is sound despite 'mess'

WASHINGTON (AP) - The economy is fundamentally sound despite the temporary "mess" it's in, the White House said Sunday in the kind of upbeat assessment that Barack Obama had mocked as a presidential candidate.

Obama's Democratic allies pleaded for patience with an administration hitting the two-month mark this week, while Republicans said the White House's plans ignore small business and the immediate need to fix what ails the economy. After weeks projecting a dismal outlook on the economy, administration officials - led by the president himself in recent days - swung their rhetoric toward optimism in what became Wall Street's best stretch since November.

During the fall campaign, Obama relentlessly criticized his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, for declaring, "The fundamentals of our economy are strong." Obama's team painted the veteran senator as out of touch and failing to grasp the challenges facing the country.

But on Sunday, that optimistic message came from economic adviser Christina Romer. When asked during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" if the fundamentals of the economy were sound, she replied: "Of course they are sound."

"The fundamentals are sound in the sense that the American workers are sound, we have a good capital stock, we have good technology," she said. "We know that - that temporarily we're in a mess, right? We've seen huge job loss, we've seen very large falls in GDP. So certainly in the short run we're in a - in a bad situation."

Just a week ago, White House Office of Management and Budget director Peter Orszag declared that "fundamentally, the economy is weak." Days later, Obama told reporters he was confident in the economy.

I don't even know where to begin here. Outstanding.

So the fundamentals of the economy are still strong? :doh

I believe his (obama) change of rhetoric has more to do with China's worry about the value of the Treasuries that China holds.

I do recall John McCain being soundly mocked for such a statement... and so did I. Perhaps I should pull it up, then see if the Obamanaughts that mocked myself and the Senator's pronouncement will do the same of their savior. Something tells me that would be a wasted effort, for their love of his eminence has robbed them of the ability to think for themselves nor see their own hypocrisy.

This statement should separate the democrat partisan hacks from the real ideologues.

It's good to know the crisis is over.

It's only over until they give health care by force, then the crisis will be begin again.

Not really, because they're going to tax healthcare payments, so that'll smooth everything out. ;)

Something a lot of people missed is that if you are laid off, your business has to pay 60% or 65% of your cobra health benefits for a specific period of time.

Employers are going to look to drop health benefits all together.
Talk about making a problem just to make a solution.

(Edit: I can't remember if that was in the stimulus or if it was the budget that just passed.)

Nothing against RNYC for posting this. It does show a lack of message discipline. Of course, this is on both sides. Just last week this was Obama's recession. Then he was fear mongering. Now, it's true that the Administration's message has lost it's discipline. He was killing confidence. Now he is trying to instill confidence. All this tells me is that neither side has a freaking clue what the future holds but they are jockeying for position to stand clear of the blame.

The sound our economy is making is a giant sucking sound.

This thread just goes to prove that no matter what Obama does, the extreme right will always criticize him, and the extreme left will always support him.

And neither of those two groups are worth much, so it is important to ignore them.

It would have been nice for him to admit these things when he was fear mongering for trillions, and moving to radically "change" America.

The guy, Obama... has been all over the place like a dog's dick during his short reign... which began right after the election. He's coming across like a manic depressive.

Thank you for proving my point.

Thank you for proving my point.

I ask you one question?

Is the comparison and are the questions valid in this instance?
Yes?
No?

The answer:
He has changed his tune to one that is diametrically opposed to everything he's said on the subject to date.

Pre-election he was all sunny tomorrows.
Yes we can.

He's been all over the place like a dog's dick in a few months.
Is he going to give us a personality of the month thingy?

So.
Are the questions and observations consistent with his behavior?

I think you wasted a good bullet on this thread.
It might have worked on another, one aimed at mocking The Great Messiah.

It's good to know the crisis is over.
Since the crisis is over, do you think The Obama will decide we do not need to spend all that money?

How so? This thread to me shows obama will say whatever he thinks is best besides the reality either way....

There are far more appropriate threads for you to pull this out of your quiver. This is not one of them my friend.

Well then you missed the message. The message is that Democrats are a bunch of demagoguing hypocrites that will say and do ANYTHING to get elected even if it means lying, impugning the character of good people and distorting the historic facts.

I cannot say that I am surprised that you missed that message.

Wrong again; this thread illustrates what a bunch of profound hypocrites Liberals and Democrats are and how they will do and say anything to get elected.

Bush and McCain made the same statements and were kicked in the crotch for them. But now when the Obama Admin says it, suddenly it has respect.

Carry on.

Beats me. I wish they'd pick a message and stick to it. A month ago it was "crisis, crisis, crisis", and now the economy is sound? Seriously, it really seems like this administration doesn't really know what is going on, which begs the question, how do they know how to fix it if they don't even know if it's broke?

Well the stock market is on the up several days in row now.

Which means... what?

You took the words right from my finger tips. I would like to know what this is supposed to mean based on the thread premise and my comments?

Bush stated that the economy was structurally sound when the market was in the 14,000 range and was a moron. Obama makes the comment when the market has lost over $12 trillion in value and is a genius?

:rofl
