Aren't we getting ahead of ourselves a bit? First you have to catch one. I'm afraid given the ludicrous rules of engagement of the EU joint operation thats unlikely. Our ships are only allowed to 'discourage' pirates by being in the area. Rather difficult given the amount of ocean they are dealing with. Of course, we have the technological advantage. Our vessels know immediately when a ship has been attacked because they're all tracked on GPS. If one breaks from its designated route, anchors, or (the dead giveaway) makes for the coast of Somalia then we know something is up. Alas, the RoE prohibits our naval forces from actually re-taking the ships with armed force. Just imagine, all those marines sitting about on deck twiddling their thumbs, as piracy runs rampant, their salaries paid from our taxes.

Oh, and the answer to the OP's question? .45 ACP to the temples, throw the bodies overboard. Once they start washing up on the beaches the Somali's will realise its no longer open season on shipping.

Release them in Somalia.

Some of these "pirates" arent as guilty as you may think. Its the usual suspect who is the bad guy in this situation.Thats right FRANCE.Some of the bad things these pirates do include trying to stop european countries dumping nuclear waste in their sea.

I hate catch and release. I prefer to eat what I catch.

I mean, I don't agree with trophy fishing either. If you aren't going to eat it, you shouldn't be doing it.

But the legal problems still exist, international law and piracy makes it hard for countries to prosecute. Very few options are left.

So the 'pirates' I've been hearing about recently aren't so much pirates as, say, particularly aggressive Greenpeace activists?

Make 'em walk the plank;)

Here's an interesting read on what the poster was referring to....

Johann Hari: You Are Being Lied to About Pirates

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia's unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."

This is the context in which the men we are calling "pirates" have emerged

I've seen that, thanks. I have no reason to believe toxic wastes were not dumped off the coast of Somalia in the early 1990s.

That said, if these 'pirates' are truly holding foreign ships ransom because certain western corporations dumped waste and illegally fished Somali waters, then it follows that these 'pirates,' who are acting out of moral outrage, not greed, are using the ransoms obtained to feed and clothe and provide medical support for the oppressed Somali people. No?

;)

The Pirates income through pirating has helped to directly restimulate the Somali economy.
Their use of money has benefitted the towns

Of course. Apparently they are absolutely viewed as heroes to the villages. They have brought life back into dying fishing villages, along with supplies, money, etc all with the full support of the coastal peoples.

Well certainly. Illegal gains have a way of boosting local economies. Some of our most notorious gangsters have been well dressed...

They're still gangsters.

Ain't buying it, sorry.

:rofl

Of course they're still gangsters. But they're romantic gangsters and they have brought both hope and means to desperate abandon peoples who have no real stable government to speak of. Coastal peoples who made their living fishing seas that now have been over fished and contaminated with toxins. It's hard not to have a certain amount of respect and awe for these men. Aaargh....

At least the Somalian pirates operate from a moral imperative that is somewhat reasonable.

The panama canal pirates are just nasty drug lords; or at least I've yet to read anything that made me feel romantic about them.

You think they are gangsters, i think they have done more for Somalia than any politican.

They are more brave than me.
If US/EU/Chinese navies are on the sea, i'd lock myself in a downstairs celler rather than venture in the sea lol
