Chinese rights leader's family 'defects to US'

WASHINGTON (AFP) The family of missing Chinese rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who has been tipped for a Nobel Peace Prize, has defected to the United States, rights activists said Thursday.

New York-based Human Rights in China and Radio Free Asia said Gao's wife and children arrived in the United States on Wednesday and were seeking asylum.

"It was extraordinarily difficult to get us out of China. The friends who helped us escape took enormous pains, some even risking their own lives," Gao's wife, Geng He, told Radio Free Asia's Mandarin service.
While some on here will defend the brutal regime in Beiping, those in China who work for the cause of freedom and liberty are persecuted and try to get out if they can.

I mean I understand they are in danger, but, in all honesty this looks like they are running away. I guess they can continue their fight in the Americas, but how would it appear to those who rely on them? That there's no hope in China, GTFO while you can?

If the Chinese government puts you in a Soviet-style gulag-like prison, what hope is there? Sadly, the international community is averse to putting the kind of pressure on the Chinese thugs that is really needed to have any hope of moving things in the right direction in China.

This year, with the sensitive anniversaries of the Tibet crackdown and Tian'anmen Square, we really need to ratchet up the pressure on Beiping.

I don't think the United States and her allies can afford that. America seems to be all too ready to turn the moral-eye when there's money to be made.

Sometimes we have to remember that there are more important things than money.

Something about "avarice being the root of all evil..." or something like that.

You're correct, but we cannot rely on the Government and Corporations for civil rights, especially in another country. If we want to see change, then we have to be the change we want to see in the world, as Ghandi would say. United States' job is not to protect the rights of the citizens in the world, it is to protect her citizens, and her assets in other countries.

It has to be citizens who promote civility.

I don't think the activist defected, just his family. That's what the wording makes it sound like anyway

What pressure could we put on China, though? Military? Do we really want to start a cold war? Economic? I'd say that China has as much, if not more economic leverage over us than we do over them. In the long term America is a much more powerful economic agent, but in the short term they have all the advantages. They're sitting on a mountain of our currency, a mountain range of our debt, and the majority of the government's recent actions have been financed by China. If we were ever able to strong arm China, we sure as hell can't right now.

Ludahai, the fact that you call it Beiping shows how partisan you are.

If the family defected to the U.S. because they were being hunted, that was the smart thing to do. No need to end up in a prison because of what your husband did.

That is also how I read the article.

That is the official name of the city in the country in which I live. We even call its most famous food "Beiping Duck." -- yummy

Agreed. I would do the same to avoid the laogai as well.
