A family's year of 'buying black'

A family's year of 'buying black' - Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Chicago -- Maggie Anderson drives 14 miles to buy groceries, which might seem curious given that she lives in bustling Oak Park, Ill. She and her husband, John, travel 18 miles to a health food store in Chicago for vitamins, supplements and personal care products. They drive some distance for gasoline too.

The reason? They want to help solve what they call "the crisis in the black community." They want to buy black.
"Supporting your own isn't necessarily exclusive," said John Anderson, a financial advisor who grew up in Detroit and has a Harvard degree in economics and an MBA from Northwestern, "and you're not going to convince everybody of that."
"We, as African Americans, support everyone," he said. "The ebony experiment is saying, 'Listen, let's pay attention to us. Let's give some support.' Ebony experiment can bring awareness, and in that awareness comes better profits and better services and better opportunities. It just grows from there."
I think these people are complete morons.

It's always pointed out when "whites" are being racially discriminatory but it is more rampant in ethnic communities in my opinion.

So when will black people and other ethnic groups stop being so racially discriminating?

I have no objection to this, nor "buying white" or "buying yellow" or anything else like that. It's a free, capitalist country most of us here on these boards live in, and people can shop wherever they want.

I think that's more or less because in ethnic neighborhoods, the ethnic store on the corner may have more of what the population of those neighborhoods is looking for. A hispanic is going to shop at a hispanic store over an asian store because they are looking for products that hispanic stores sell. Simple as that and nothing to do with being discriminating.

Why do ethnic foods always smell so bad?

I can understand that but what was the point of the era of desegregation to only have those people want to segregate themselves.

I always want to go into ethnic food stores, I love their products I've tried from my coworkers but I've always been a bit apprehensive because of their purposeful segregation.

Because they stink? I don't have a problem with these people buying from local black businesses, but they sure are using a lot of gas to do it. I guess this is okay with Obama, as long as they check their tire pressure. Heheh, j/k.

But IMO it's not segregation. It's just stores serving what the area wants. If you go into an ethnic store, nobody is going to throw you out because you're not the same nationality as the owners. Nobody wants to segragate themselves, they just want to buy the products they want and use.

The only bad ethnic food I've tried was some sort of bread from India.

Made me want to throw up.

I'm all about free markets and honestly I don't care if people wish to buy things from other people that are the same color.

I had a bad experience with a restaurant, that unknown to me and my friends, only served black people.
They wouldn't serve us and the other patrons were not happy we were there.

Hispanic folks seem to not care as much, although they usually do have their own neighborhoods.
