Elderly Saudi woman sentenced to lashings
Published: March 9, 2009

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 9 (UPI) -- A 75-year-old Saudi Arabian woman has been sentenced to receive 40 lashes for hosting two unrelated men in her house, local media reported. The Saudi daily newspaper al-Watan said the woman, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, has appealed her sentence after being charged with offenses against Islam by the religious police, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, CNN reported Monday.

Sawadi says the two men in her house were a man she considers her son because she breast-fed him as a baby and a friend who was escorting him as he delivered bread to the elderly woman. "It's made everybody angry because this is like a grandmother," Saudi women's rights activist Wajeha Huwaider told CNN. "Forty lashes -- how can she handle that pain? You cannot justify it."

The U.S. broadcaster reported that Saudi religious police last week also detained two male novelists for questioning after they approached a female writer, Halima Muzfar, for an autograph at a book fair in Riyadh.

This sort of stuff is just plain cruel.

all the more reason that we should have attacked SA after 9-11 instead of Iraq.....

I was just reading this story, Actually. Yes, it is unbelievably cruel and should not happen in this day and age. Gee, maybe the world should take a stand and boycott their oil.

If there's anything that is positive, it's that people are now fighting back and speaking out. This is good. Change is slow, but this is how it starts. From the article that I read:

The actions of the religious police have come under increased scrutiny in Saudi Arabia recently, as more and more Saudis urge that the commission's powers be limited. Last week, the religious police detained two male novelists for questioning after they tried to get the autograph of a female writer, Halima Muzfar, at a book fair in Riyadh, the capital of the kingdom.

"This is the problem with the religious police," added Al-Huwaider, "watching people and thinking they're bad all the time. It has nothing to do with religion. It's all about control. And the more you spread fear among people, the more you control them. It's giving a bad reputation

I wonder if she would have gotten the same sentence had the two men been Mullahs.

Or drill on their own lands.

It's disgusting that in this century, people still treat people like that.

Can't say i'm surprised.

Yeah right, attack the country which has the holy cities of the 2nd largest religion? lol

Meanwhile a previous President of Israel is accused of raping one of his subordinates, while the present (for the moment) Prime Minister stands accused of corruption.
Within the state of Israel certain roads are forbidden to be driven on by non Jews.
Within every religion and every race there are degrees of intolerance that to other religions and races are seen as primitive.
Yes, this punishment for a woman of 78 is disgusting indeed this sentence should be set aside.

I see threads like these, but I always wonder what the hell could be done about this? They are a fairly competent nation-state, and would look at us as douches because we're trying to connect a way of life with an incident. i am not saying that there are not flaws in their code, I am saying that until we are without sin, our credibility is laughable at trying to critique their status quo.

It won't occur, the king will most likely pardon

I tend to agree. The last time the international community raised holy hell with Saudi Arabia (when a woman who was raped was sentenced to be lashed) the Kingdom recinded the punishment.

The new King is more moderate anyway so it won't happen.

He seems to be. However, I doubt the King would even know about this unless his advisors approached him with... Ummm, we have a growing PR problem your Highness.

They would keep him informed, he'll do a media spin and make the monarch out to be all merciful and so on. It's happened previously

These countries like Saudi Arabia that impose extreme sharia law should all be nuked off the face of the planet.

Don't hold it back now, tell us what you really think .... :screwy

Edit: Welcome to DP btw lol

Why not ? That religion is making covert war on us.

Take the fight to the enemies heart, the response to 9-11 should've been a MOAB on Mecca's black block.

Don't bother alluding the the threat of Islam's numbers, as they can't feed themselves without help, so their numbers are gone in about 3 months of struggle.

And how do you think Muslims would react to Mecca being bombed by US?

I don't really care. I could hope it pissed them off enough to fight their religious war with the West out in the open, to suit up and meet the West on the field of battle, but to hope for honest balls like that from Islam is silliness.

Since they don't have the balls to fight in the open, I reckon the Muslims would just start more cowardly random murders of civilians, further justifying the eventual extermination of every single one of them.

I don't really care.

You wouldn't would you? Clearly human life is worthless if you advocate the murdering of millions.

Oh and i'll tell you how Muslims would react, every abrahamic religious building would be just as destroyed as Mecca

Killing them, for engaging in religious war against me, is not murder, it is victory.

You really think you third worlders want to get in a building flattening contest with the West ? ? ?

Too bad, because you simply don't have the military might to carry out your half of the threat, while the West certainly does.

It's cold blooded murder, killing Arabs purely because Mecca is on their soil? Hell, it's genocide. You'd do Hitler proud

They clearly did a bang up job 8 years ago .... *cough*

It's cold blooded murder,

NO, its not, and I already explained why.

killing Arabs

Who said anything about race until YOU did ?? Islam is a creed, not a race.

purely because Mecca is on their soil?

Tuff luck for the enemy that they located their capital in their own country

Hell, it's genocide.

Again, Islam is a creed, not a race, so the term genocide does not apply.

So now Saudi Arabia are enemies? And what race are those who live in Saudi Arabia? ... I could have sworn it was Arabs.

So to attack Islam you will attack a country purely because it holds within its borders a holy city? How lovely, killing women and children.

I half expect to see a swastika on your avatar.

Are you really too dense to understand that when I fight back against Muslims, because their religion is making war on the West, race has nothing to do with it ? If the Muslim in need of killing happens to have Arab blood, so what ? If the Muslim in need of killing does NOT have Arab blood, again, so what ? ? ?

So to attack Islam you will attack a country purely because it holds within its borders a holy city? How lovely, killing women and children.

Yes, after this religion makes war on the West, I feel fully justified in bombing their capital. The women are just munitions factories and the children are just undetonated bombs. I want the people who made the Jihadist dead too, so don't think you worry me with guilt over "civilians" as in my view, Islam has none.

Here's a nice example of hyper-partisanship. Man changes the subject to interject irrelevant moral equivalency. You're not defending your ideology here, unless you're Muslim.
