N. Korea warns intercepting 'satellite' will prompt counterstrike+

Easy enough to tell if it is an ICBM as opposed to a genuine Satellite launch.

True, but the rockets to deliver a civilian satellite are not materially different from rockets designed to deliver warheads. We're worried that North Korea is hiding a ICBM weapons delivery test as a civilian satellite launch. It's like taking your prototype illegal sniper rifle designed to kill people at 3 miles hunting and saying that there is no cause for alarm. Yes, it can be used for legitimate civilian purposes but that doesn't mean you're planning on keeping it that way.

This type of ploy is being used more frequently.

"We are not testing ICBMs, we are testing satellite rockets."

"We are not making nuclear weapons, we are generating power."

If it comes close to entering the airspace of other nations it should be shot down immediately.

Good thing GWB didn't listen to the loons and kill off the NMD.

There is little difference. The only way we'll be able to know for sure is when we see the device that comes off of the missile. At that point, it's too late.

There's reason to be suspect. North Korea, as the most isolated and insular of all nations, has little need for a communications satellite.

Dear Leader wants to have more access to internet porn.....

Not so much. You can launch a warhead into orbit and then drop it on its target at a later time.

Are you talking about FOBS? There's no way North Korea has this technology.

No. I'm talking about basic orbital mechanics.

You launch into orbit. You then use the thrusters on the orbiter to slow the orbiter down so that it will land when/where you want it to.

Firstly, what would the requirements for such a system be? A precise navigation system, a complex and precise control system, some means of communicating with the "satellite." That much is possibly achievable. The most important requirement though is an international community that's willing to tolerate an aggressive, despotic regime floating a nuclear weapon around in space to be used at their beckoning. Not happening...

You dont even need the 'precice control system' or a means of communicating with the orbiter, expecially if all you want to do is hit an area with a nuclear weapon.

How do you know the orbiter has a nuke in it?

This is another NK attempt to look strong as the U.S.-South Korea forces undergo their joint exercise operations. North Korea is in no shape to go to war with anyone, and must remember that Mao is no longer alive to watch their back. If they go to war China will not be on their side, thus they are barking far beyond their bite.

Yes, well, all this is well and good.
Right up to the point where Seattle dissapears in a cloud of radioactive dust.

This statement is what seems to have prompted the NorKo threat:

Feb. 26, 2009—

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Martha Raddatz, Adm. Timothy Keating, head of the U.S. Pacific Commands, said that the military is prepared to shoot down any North Korean ballistic missile -- if President Obama should give the order.

"If a missile leaves the launch pad we'll be prepared to respond upon direction of the president," Keating told ABC News. "I'm not a betting man but I'd go like 60/40, 70/30 that it will, they will attempt to launch a satellite. There's equipment moving up there that would indicate the preliminary stages of preparation for a launch. So I'd say it's more than less likely."

"Should it look like it's not a satellite launch -- that it's something other than a satellite launch -- we'll be ready to respond."

Intelligence reports suggest that North Korea is preparing a long-range missile test. Earlier this week, North Korea announced its plans to send a satellite into orbit as part of its space program.

However, many in the international community assert that North Korea's satellite test is simply a means of concealing a long-range missile test -- a move that would flare existing tension in the region.

ABC News: U.S. Ready to Respond to N.Korea Missile

Since our beloved president Obanana is going to sit down with the Taliban then we shoud equally trust North Korea as I'm sure Jimmy Carter would advise. Love and peace is everywhere now!!

What did someone say? Oh, yeah:

Good thing GWB didn't listen to the loons and kill off the NMD.

Well we still can't defend against a nuke hidden in a donkey cart so its all a waste of money; its all useless because N Korea and Iran clearly do not wish to develop nuclear or conventional ICBMs.
