Government shows increase of 700,000 food stamp recipients in a single month.
March 5, 2009: 4:00 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A record 31.8 million Americans received food stamps at the latest count, an increase of 700,000 people in one month with the United States in recession, government figures showed Thursday.
Food stamps, which help poor people buy groceries, are the major U.S. anti-hunger program, forecast to cost at least $51 billion in this fiscal year ending Sept. 30, up $10 billion from fiscal 2008.
"A weakened economy means that many more individuals are turning to SNAP/food stamps," said the Food Research and Action Center. Last summer food stamps were renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The average food stamp benefit is $115 a month for individuals and $255 a month per household.
Enrollment for food stamps in December was up 2.2% from the previous month with increases in all but three states. Ohio had the largest increase among large states, up 3.4%, to 1.26 million people. Texas had the largest enrollment, 3.05 million, up 1.8%.
The previous record for food stamp enrollment was 31.6 million last September, which included "disaster" stamps for states hit by hurricanes and floods.

If the greedy conservatives on wall street would stop shipping jobs out of the country, this might not be happening....:2razz:

says the "moderate"....:2razz:

are you suggesting that keeping jobs here is a liberal posltion? Let me guess, most of your income is from Wall street and you don't care about American jobs as long as your capital gains are taxed at only 15%.....

No doubt, I mean if I was a business owner, I'd want to pay a guy $75 an hour to screw 4 lug nuts on a wheel.

Why would I want to pay $75 a week for the same job oversees?

I mean, c'mon comrade, get in line. I hear this line is for shoes...

I just find it funny you think wall street traders are shipping jobs overseas.:lol::lol::lol:

How is this any different than say... last year, or 5 years ago?

The economy is in tatters and unemployment is the highest it's been in 25 years. Of course the demand for handouts is going to climb.

What socialist agenda caused 31.8 million people to be on food stamps? OR are you arguing that socialism is on the March because the country is allowing 31.8 million people to be on food stamps?

Ok, so an economic crisis increases the numbers of Americans living in poverty, and because of that more people are applying for food stamps.

The alternative of course would be just for them to go without food. Is that what you are advocating?

Besides, food stamps is a farm subsidy more than anything else.

Typical Republican BS....blame Liberals for the results that their failed policies created. Is anyone surprised?

did I say traders? No, I did not....yeah, I should have said Corporate types instead of wall street, but the market does make demands of businesses. They demand that the businesses show more profit, and if it means shipping jobs overseas, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead...screw the american economy, as long as some numbers are reached in record time...
As for $75 per hour, who was it that signed the contracts with the unions if not the corporate types, who then gave themselves huge salaries and bonuses for giving away the farm???.
Unions suck, but corporate and wall street types suck even more.....
BTW, York peppermint patties are soon going to be made in Mexico, where the water and air are filthy....

I am suggesting that keeping low skill, low wage, production possibilities limiting jobs in this country as being a liberal position. If liberals really gave a damn about less fortunate people, instead of using their (the poor) existence as a gear towards more governmental control, they would be empowering them with education.

Instead they wish to offer oppression in disguise, willing to ship the most productive jobs (minority of all employment) overseas, while the majority of employment (low tech low productivity) stays here!

If a task can be completed with comparable production overseas, while limiting input costs, why do Americans even want them to stay here?

My question to those of you who share this sentiment: If jobs going overseas takes employment away from Americans, how come we have had job growth almost every year since the Clinton administration?

Hint: Look at what the top ten in demand jobs were in 1997, and compare the list to 2007.

I'm calling complete BS on that. People would have to live within their means and eat less prepackaged foods.

They would not starve that is just a red herring.

Well it would certainly be a travesty for millions of people to begin to starve in the United States.

Sure - it wasn't failed policies during the Clinton administration that created the last recession, right?

A pox on BOTH your houses.

That is a red herring if there ever was one.

People would not starve, I can't believe I have to say this. :doh

There ARE people who legitimately need the help food stamps provides. However, it is also true that there are others to use their food stamps to purchase things like lobster and chocolate cake.

I know this.

On the other hand there are a huge amount of people who can work and buy their own food but refuse to because there is not maximum on drawing food stamps.

They are government benefit lifers.

I don't think we are totally on different pages here. I agree that there are people who are on the system long-term who can definately work (when economic times are better than this.) However, with an unemployment now over 8% with no end in sight, you can't deny that there is definately a need to help those who are TEMPORARILY unemployed NOW.

If the greedy conservatives on wall street would stop shipping jobs out of the country, this might not be happening....:2razz:

This job loss has nothing to do with outsourcing... It has to do with crappy long term policies and a collapsing economy, not because its shipping jobs oversees, but because the economy as it is had been unsustainable for a very long time.

Capitalism is to blame for all this.. Thats what got out of hand, peoples greed.. In the end everything just wasnt sustainable and now capitalism has to beg socialism to be able to survive.

But what could "socialism" do without the capital created by "capitalism?"
