Fed Refuses to Release Bank Lending Data, Insists on Secrecy

    Bloomberg.com: News

March 5 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve Board of Governors receives daily reports on loans to banks and securities firms, the institution said in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by Bloomberg News.

The Fed refused yesterday to disclose the names of the borrowers and the loans, alleging that it would cast “a stigma” on recipients of more than $1.9 trillion of emergency credit from U.S. taxpayers and the assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.

I find it insulting that they can take my money, then tell me I have no right to know how it is being spent....

I understand the reasoning behind the Feds decision, but it is still wrong. The Fed believes that if taxpayers know which banks and corporations are hurting, then investors and the like will avoid these failing companies leading to their ultimate demise. I think that the people should know and that in knowing, will move to help these companies to assure their success and the repayment of the taxpayers.

Hope that did not get too convaluted...
