'Octomom bill' would limit embryo implants

Georgia 'Octomom bill' would limit embryo implants - CNN.com

The tabloid-friendly tale of the so-called California "Octomom" continues to stir debate -- this time 2,000 miles away in the Georgia state capitol, where lawmakers say they're trying to prevent a repeat.

A Georgia state senator introduced legislation to limit the number of embryos that can be implanted in a woman's uterus during in-vitro fertilization procedures.
I don't know whether to laugh or feel bad.

I'm not sure where I stand on this. I mean, yeah we should support that fact people wanna have more than on or two kids at a time. But also, we don't want people like Suleman to go crazy and not be able to support her kids.

Then again, this is only in Georgia, do you think it might spread to other states?

I don't see why we shouldn't have limits like this. It is my understanding that having as many embryos implanted as octomom did is very likely to cause many health problems in the child once it is born. People choosing to cause harm to their children in this way are essentially committing abuse and steps should be taken to prevent it.

I think that if you can afford to raise any number of children on your own then you should be allowed to have as many kids as you want.If not then you have no business popping out more kids. I think the solution is to require these clinics to verify that the applicant can actually afford to take care of more children on their own before implanting anyone with embryos. Another solution is take custody of any more children that welfare moms have while on tax payer funded services.

I don't know why we went so many weeks with this story before we found out she only wanted one more child. It's kinda relevant.

Women should have the freedom to do what they want with their bodies, and as jamesrage said, if they can properly care for them, it should be no problem. Some couples are dying to have babies and that may be their only chance to afford to get embryos implanted and they may want to try as hard as they can to have a baby or babies. A single mother like octomom with xx number of kids should not be able to qualify for embryo implants and I would support that kind of bill but not an all out limit for everyone.
I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.

I think most people are appalled by the fact she a welfare mom went to a clinic so she can pop out more children when she already has six kids she can not afford to take care of on her own. Considering she is already milking the system and tried to claim she wasn't a tax payer mooch, one has to wonder if her claims of only going for one child is true.

but states' don't own or license embryos, they're held by private business.

which is an interesting point on its own. what should the process be for allowing entities to control human embryos?
And why does your tone suggest that you do not care about children?

Seems to me that the 'a woman has a right to do what she wants to with her body' crowd should be opposed to this.

But it's not her body, it's a labs private property. I see more of a criticism of it from the "property is sacred" crowd.

I don't know if it should be law, but I do think that the medical community can police themselves on this. There are certainly some doctor ethics questions going on here. He had to have known her financial situation (how did she afford this, BTW), but more than that he knew that 6 embryos were too many and that it could have serious negative side effects on the developing embryo.
