Russia Brushes Off Obama: No 'haggling'

Even if it costs billions and doesn't work?

Already been shown to work. I realize thats the canned line (esp form Democrats) but its 10 years out of date.

Care to say how they can exploit the US now?

Numerous ways. Obama has shown he wil buy them off.
If you don't think the Russians will exploit that..lol.

BTW They ARE exploiting it right now. Instead of agreeing they are pushing for more...and they clearly believe Obama will give it to them.

+2 for a defense policy based more on diplomacy with major powers instead of technology that fails 90% of the time.

There is no defense agreement here. There is nothing here but an offer by one party to give up something significant for "help" from another party.

..and now it fails 90% of the time..not only do I know you pulled that number out of your nether region it also confirms that your at least 10 years behind the times.

No matter how you try to spin this its a winner for Russia even if it goes nowhere from this point on they have already been handed a major political victory.

Obama tried to barter our defense promises to our allies for nothing but air.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And your evidence is this what? Obama hasn't the balls to handle the real world. He won't be allowed a teleprompter in negotiations with real leaders, they'll just keep ignore his letters and keep laughing at him. He'll give campaign speeches and talk talk talk.

Remember Reagan? "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Do you think Obama has the ability to take such a stand? I don't.

Reagan was a professional actor. He had zero, READ ZERO, part in the breaking of the Soviet Union.

" Obama hasn't the balls to handle the real world?"
He seems to be doing quite well, thank you. He sorta is the most powerful man in the entire world, if he is not capable of handling your definition of the "real world", then very few can.

Are you comparing Chamberlin to Obama and Hitler to Putin? :doh

Obama will play nicely for a few more months, then I believe he will start the back-hand bidding at $20
And you base this assumption on what? :doh

Reagan was a professional actor. He had zero, READ ZERO, part in the breaking of the Soviet Union.

Now is that because he was a professional actor or because you needed a convenient red herring to detract from the fact that he aggressively negotiated with the Soviet Union better than Obama seems to be handling Russia?

It's time to handle Putin like Reagan would.

I'll add to this that according to several Cold War historians, Reagan was very influential in the breaking of the Soviet Union. His negotiating just wasn't aggressive, it was flat out ballsy. Regan didn't give the Reds an inch of ground and pushed the Russians past the point of no return with regard to the arms race.

And never be quick to dismiss entertainers...Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and Vaclav Havel...all have three things in common. They all have a theatrical background in their early lives, they all went on to become great leaders, and they were all very powerful figures in bringing down the Soviet Union through the Cold War.

There is Obama-land, where everyone is reasonable and all you have to do is give the right incentive and everyone is happy.

Then there is the real world, where other leaders see Obama as weak, and dismiss him as such. Obama's weakness is on display for the world, and we're gonna pay for it.
I can't say I follow you here. How would the fact that Russia didn't jump for joy at that offer translate into Obama's apparent weakness? I mean if they had accepted it, would you have argued the offer was too generous?

We have nothing to gain from building a missile defense system if there is no threat to begin with.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather keep Iran from becoming a threat than building a weapon system to deal with that threat.

Now the other argument is that the real threat is Russia, but I don't see that being made.

Well it should be the case being made here. Russia is clearly sending a signal that it intends to compete with the West, specifically the U.S., in terms of military and political influence. While I'm not suggesting war, I am suggesting due diligence and a strong U.S. defensive capability.

-----------------------------------------------------

This may not be the popular position here, especially among some of my liberal brethren, but....
  • The U.S. should do whatever it can to maintain it's position as the most powerful nation on earth. We can argue that there needs to be "balance" all we want, but if history has shown us anything peace is ensured through superior firepower.
  • While I agree with Obama's idea of open communication with foreign powers, I do not subscribe to conceding our military superiority on any level as a means of that negotiation. Not ever.
  • We cannot dismiss Russia's recent past and their desire to use military force to project their foreign policy...especially on a regional level.
  • Russia is getting back into the business of being a major arms exporter and they are serious about selling in quantity. I know some will say "but the U.S. is doing the same." I don't care, I don't want it to ever be a fair balance between Russia and the U.S.
