CHA-AM, Thailand – Malaysia's prime minister has called for Myanmar's Muslim boat people to be pushed back if they attempt to land on any Southeast Asian shores in search of asylum, according to newspaper reports Friday.

This is disgusting. Mahathir is a race baiter - he has been for a long time, basically forcing policies in Malaysia that are discriminatory against Chinese and Indians in Malaysia for decades. However, given his pro-Islamic rhetoric and leadership he has in the OIC, I would have expected him to come out in support of his co-religionists from Arakan in western Burma. Then again, he is an authoritarian at heart so it should not be a surprise that he would come out in support of the dictators in Burma. Malaysia is such a lovely country with wonderful people who continue to be tainted by this semi-dictator with no regard whatsoever for a shared humanity, even among his fellow Muslims.

Myanmar's consul general in Hong Kong, Ye Myint Aung, earlier this month described Rohingya people as "ugly as ogres" in a letter to media and diplomats.

If this is how Consul General Ye typifies them and if this is typical of the feelings of Burma's government (and it clearly is), they should be given all possible assistance by the international community and not shoved out to sea by the Thai government or anyone else.

Shameful.

If he were an American politician saying that we need to keep illegal immigrants at bay would you object to it? Are you pro-illegal immigration? Sure. The way he went about it is total dick. But is he really that different from people saying we need to keep them eleeguls aout?

You obviously have no idea about the problem with the Arakanese. These people are clearly refugees fleeing a government that has been persecuting them for decades. I have been following this for nearly two decades, and if anything, the situation as gotten worse. There are few peoples in the world who are more deserving of refugee status than the Rohingyas (Arakanese).

Irrelevant. Many of the illegal immigrants fleeing from South America are Guatemalans, Salvadoreans, Mexicans fleeing the civil wars or gang wars in their countries. If anything the situation of many South Americans has gotten worse in the last couple of years. They're cornered by everything from dictators to ruthless militias. Again. Are you now pro-illegal immigration?

Almost everyone is "clearly a refugee" when talking about immigration. Half the illegals in Britain will swear to you they need asylum.

I don't know about the facts in this case but it is hardly unique to claim to be an "asylum seeker".

Not irrelevant. The very government that should be PROTECTING the rights of these people is who is persecuting them and driving them from their homes. They have a RIGHT to refugee status under relevant international agreements and customary international law.
