AMSTERDAM – A Dutch mayor said Thursday the nine people killed when a Turkish Airlines jet slammed into a field near Amsterdam's main airport are five Turks and four Americans. Haarlemmermeer mayor Theo Weterings said the names of the victims will not be released until the bodies have been formally identified. It was not immediately clear how long that would take.

"The relatives have been informed that the missing person will be dead," he told the Associated Press. "We have arranged some help for them."

Given how the plane came apart, aka everyone who died died in the front section, first class appears to be even less appealing. Sad story through and through. Thank God for mud though. Apparently that absorbed most of the energy saving the 120+ people on the plane.

Werent the Americans who died, working for Turkish airlines, or where they passengers? I know 3 of the Turks who died where captains and one an air hostess. Im pretty sure some of the Americans who died on that plane where working for the Turkish airliner at the time....eh its irrelevant, what does it matter. Its just weird to hear a plane i take often has crashed o_O.
It was completely inevitable that the Americans and Turks both suffered together the most amount of loss of life on that plane crash though. Theres a large American population in Istanbul and they have regular visits to Amsterdam through THY airlines. Ive gone to Istanbul tonnes then directly to Amsterdam afterwards. I just dont understand how 3 captains died? How the hell was there 3 captains?

Kinda gets me thinking.... Im leaving in mid May to Amsterdam for 10 days; at least i now have odds on my side:thinking

Then again, i am flying a US airline.

THY isnt dodgy btw, its a quality airliner, so it doesnt make a difference what you take. Plus commercial aircraft accidents barely happen, you need not count your odds. If we was talking about KTHY id understand, but THY are a decent bunch.
