    Man slays sister for honour

    Source: Pakistan Daily Times
    Date: Febuary 23, 2009

KARACHI: A man surrendered himself after killing his elderly sister on the pretext of honour killing.

Elahi Bux, 45, surrendered himself after axing to death his 60-year-old sister, Shehla Bibi, at his house located in Sector 15, Mehran Town, within the jurisdiction of Korangi Industrial Area Police Station.

Confessing to the crime, the accused alleged that his sister had illicit relations with a landlord of Larkana. According to SHO Ismail Lashari, Bux only dealt one swift blow to the victims head and when her screams attracted the neighbours, rather than fleeing, Bux waited for the police to arrive. The police have registered a case on behalf of the victims son.

However, according to family sources, Bux was in financial debt of the landlord and as he could not repay the money, he had married his daughter to the landlord. However, now the landlord wanted to marry Shehla Bibi, therefore, Bux thought it best to kill her rather than stain the familys honour. The deceased was a widowed mother of five children.

Over 5000 women and a few men are killed in honour killings each year. The majority of these are muslims, hindus, and sikhs.

It's been happening for a very long time, Sarge. There is no doubt that women are considered second-class citizens in many countries.
No men are anywhere, and Im allowed to go in, because Im the owner of the pageant and therefore Im inspecting it, Trump said... Is everyone OK? You know, theyre standing there with no clothes. Is everybody OK? And you see these incredible looking women, and so I sort of get away with things like that.

One of those countries being the good old USA.

This will no doubt draw a few comments.
But remember this, the USA does not reward it's female workers (in every comparable job) with the same pay rates as it rewards male workers.

Private businesses have the right to pay employees whatever they choose, within the bounds of a contract in some cases. If the government pays genders unequally, that's a problem, but other than that you're attacking the free market for acting within its rights.

And even then, comparing the United States to places like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and others that have attrocious women's rights (which is EXACTLY what he said by saying "one of those" being the U.S.) is absolutely positively laughable.

Show me those countries where a woman is running legitimately the chance to be in one of the highest offices in the land (Hillary in the primaries, Palin in the general). That one of the most powerful legislators is a female (Pelosi). Where there are independent business owners, private bosses, all the way up to CEO's that are female? Hell, for some of them, show me where their female can dress in whatever they want and go wherever they want without a man? How about that epidemic amount of Honor Killings going through the U.S., its undoubtably equal proportionally to those countries.

Give me a ****ing break. This is like saying the Los Angelos Clippers are the same as the Boston Celtics because they both play baseketball and have lost games.

I agree, and feel lucky to live in a country that treats women in an almost equal manner. The honour killings, battery acid scarring, and maiming of women in other countries has got to stop.

Indeed, in no way am I saying this country is perfect in regards to women. It suffers issues of discrimination, and even the sexual kind is not exclusive to women (research in depth into cases of divorce and even reported sexual assult and you'll find a number of cases that are far far harsher on men then women primarily because of sex). Not saying men have it anywhere near as bad relatively speaking here as women, but more pointing out every group gets a bit of discrimination at some point. We're not a utopia.

But all things considered, its a pretty damn good standard of living and one of the most even playing fields you'll likely find in the world. The self loathing and hatred for America that leads one to think its on par with places where some of the most attrocious things happen to women boggles my mind, especially when the comparison is because they on average make less in jobs.

Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone, you pave paradise and put up a parking lot.

    Fixed.

It's a shame that your lone contribution to this thread (besides a thanks) is to correct a typo in my signature. Is that all you've got to say?

What do y'all think we should do about it?
"I do not underestimate the ability of fanatical groups of terrorists to kill and destroy, but they do not threaten the life of the nation. Whether we would survive Hitler hung in the balance, but there is no doubt that we shall survive al-Qa'ida." -- Lord Hoffmann
