BART holdup victim grabs knife, kills robber

A 23-year-old visitor from the East Coast had just gotten money from an ATM when he told his friend on a cell phone that he had a bad feeling about two men approaching him at the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland.

His worst fears were realized when one suspect, Victor Veliz, 18, held a folding knife with a 5-inch blade to his neck and the other, Christopher Gonzalez, 18, threatened to shoot him Thursday night, authorities said.

In a blind panic, he lashed out at his attackers, grabbing the knife from one of them and punching the other as his friend listened in horror on the phone.

Without realizing it, authorities say, the man stabbed Gonzalez in the chest.
Gonzalez stumbled to his family's home around the corner, collapsed into his father's arms and died.

Veliz, who is affiliated with a gang, was arrested at Gonzalez's home after police allegedly found him with the East Coast visitor's cell phone. He will be charged with murder in the death of his accomplice, along with a robbery count, prosecutors said.

The robbery victim suffered only cuts in fighting off his assailants. He ran from the station, flagged down an Oakland police officer on Fruitvale Avenue and turned over the bloody knife. His name was not released.

The man was "scared senseless" when he was attacked about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, said Allison Danzig, an Alameda County deputy district attorney. He acted in self-defense and will not be charged, she said.

When police told him that Gonzalez had died, "he was very saddened and very upset," Danzig said.

Gonzalez's father, Javier Gonzalez, said Friday that his son had cried out for his parents and sister when he burst into his home on San Leandro Street. He died there.

Javier Gonzalez sobbed at the loss of his son, who worked with him in his roofing business and at Oakland Raiders games.

"I'm angry at both of them," he said of the robbery victim and Veliz. "They took my son away from me. He was a hard-working kid."

He added, "My son is dead. I want somebody to pay for this."

Several thoughts:

1. East Coast, biatch!
2. I'm very glad for the felony-murder rule.
3. In all seriousness though, I do feel bad for the dead kid's family. The fact that they had to witness that must suck, though you have to wonder what the **** is wrong with the kid that he's robbing people "around the corner" from his house.
4. Sorry dad, the guy getting robbed didn't take **** away from you. Your idiot son did.

I agree with your assessment. I get tired of hearing how "he was a good kid" or "the victim shouldn't have killed them".

That is a load of garbage IMO.

The thugs merely used the example of government.
Confiscation through coercion.
Yes we can.
I guess they couldn't wait for their stimulus.

MADD was formed from the loss of life due to drunken driving. I'm waiting for someone in the inner city to get a MADD program going in an effort to expose and eliminate the thuggery in the inner cities to the masses on a regular basis... instead of blaming the victims.

I'm actually not sure what I think about the felony-murder rule. Is it charged as first-degree? Could the kid theoretically get the death penalty?

Kudos to that bad ass East Coast gangsta though. I'd love to be the guy at the bar, humbly displaying my nicks and bruises, telling the story of my instinctual self-defense to some Desirable Ladies.

Hey javier, what do you expect? sympathy? Perhaps next time work on not raising savages........

No one took your savage son away from you. He wanted to be a stick up kid and got rocked. If he was not 18 I'd say the victim should sue your ass for raising savages.

Dude sounds like a modern day Rambo. Good on him for letting his instincts take over!

Yeah, I'm sure that's it. Next time you post your partisan crap to a thread that has nothing to do with politics do this: Press delete.

Good to see that some of our youth still have some ability to fight back in them. Its too bad the other guy got away alive.

:rofl :rofl

Damn, Crip.

Laugh, Agree (somewhat), Shudder.

Two against one and both thugs had weapons. The odds were against the east coaster. I am glad that it turned out well for him. I imagine he was scared ****less.

Unfortunantly, when you have a knife at your throat, you don't have a helluva lotta time to hold court and determine if the crime is a capitol offense or not.

study long, study wrong.

Kudos to victim! To hell with the perp. Too bad for the dad but there is no one to blame but his kid and possibly the parents who raised him to be an armed robber. Wah-Wah-Wah....

:(

RNY said that he felt bad for the kid's family. I do too. I think the father was reacting to his grief when he spoke. There is no-one to blame except the two who attempted the robbery.

You can't control another person's behavior. Do you really think that parents intentionally raise their kid to be an armed robber?

I don't think his parents sent him to school to be an armed robber, no. And I also conceed that sometimes, no matter what we do as parents our kids can take the wrong roads. But, that being said, a LOT of reasons kids turn out the way they do falls upon the shoulders of the parents.

But I do feel sadness for the father. If I lost one of my children it would crush me. But his anger is misdirected if he feels that somebody should pay for his child's death. Someone has already paid. Nobody owes him anything.

Yes. I agree with that. I would be devastated if I lost my son. I think the father was reacting to his grief. I understand that since I wanted someone to pay when I lost my sister to breast cancer. I think it's a natural reaction. I just think that the father was reacting to his loss. Is anyone reasonable when facing such a tremendous loss?

I suppose not. Emotions have a way of clouding our judgement. It's only human. I'm sorry to hear about your sister. :(

The east coaster probably did give this some thought, and if anger drove his response ,he was still right in what he did,(and that moment of anger will haunt him for the rest of his life). WE like to bitch and moan about what is proper for our criminals. There are those who would find fualt with the victim here, and which victim are we talking about ?...The victim of his own actions or the one who was the victim of tolerance in our limp wristed society,..."OH those poor criminals". I`m sorry for the whole damned mess.... My recent,(very recent), abuse at the hands of a HISPANIC criminal here in what used to be Nashville,USA, has left me wanting some amount of blood. The MS 13`s blood is of some relief. :(

I have no idea what you're trying to say. Can you clarify what you're talking about?

Thank you. It was almost five years ago. I didn't mean to de-rail, I only meant to put family loss in perspective. Even families of criminals grieve.

The kid/criminal who died took the risk of death upon himself when he acted on his decision to commit armed robbery. That doesn't mean that the kid's family isn't experiencing real grief over their loss.

Methinks if the robber would have just laid down, instead of running home, he might have lived. But, it's obviously he wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

The same holds true for snakebites. The blood gets to pumpin' and before you know it, you're a goner.

Missy I believe he was saying that he had some issues with Hispanics and he would have felt better is the issues were from someone of his own race.

Of course I could have misinterpreted it.;)

I have a confession to make. Last week, I got ripped off online making a purchase from a seller (scammer) from China.

Turns out, everything is ok now because I got a full refund.

But for a day or so there, I wanted Chinese blood. Any Chinese blood.

I'm gonna have to work on that. :3oops:
