Poll: Obama More Popular Than Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

John Lennon once claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Now President Obama has evidence that he's more popular than both.

Obama topped a new Harris interactive poll that asked 2,634 Americans who they admire enough to call a hero.

Jesus came in second on a list that includes God, Mahtma Gandhi and George Washington.

Other historic or notable figures making the top 10 were Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Abraham Lincoln, John McCain, John F. Kennedy, U.S. Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger and Mother Teresa.

Participants named the heroes randomly instead of being shown or read a list of people to choose from. The poll was conducted online between January 12 and 19, 2009.

FYI: Stalin was an atheist.

Nice try playing the religious card, though.

The article of the OP argues that "popular" = "good"; your commentary has nothing to do with that, so you are off point.

Bush was the most popular President in history at one point...and look where he is now....I rest my case.

 Oh, stop it. The poll is idiotic. People will vote for what is familiar and popular. He just took office, so of course people voted for him.

In the big picture, the results are meaningless.

And on 9/14/01, people would have said Bush and Giuliani. It happens. Doesn't mean anything.

Perhaps it's not the poll that's idiotic but the people who are voting...

When I think of heroes I think of people who have actually done something heroic; Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, MLK, Gandhi; I don't think of the "familiar and popular" guy, whether it's Bush in the wake of 9/11 or Obama in the wake of his election. It's just a sad commentary on the American public if you ask me; fickle and easily distracted.

Where did the Jonas Brothers rank??

Doesn't take much to be more popular than three dead guys. Why did Fox frame the poll this way anyhow? If they asked, "which is the most important historical figure", or "whose philosophy do you try to follow", the answers would be more relevant and fair (and balanced).

It's not a Fox News poll.

So, when someone dies they become less heroic?

Ah yes, blame the poll for the people's stupid answers. I mean, how could anyone NOT become utterly confounded by such a diabolical and fiendishly clever poll? Just look at it!

"Who is your hero?"

How ghastly! The intricacies are numerous and perplexing! Fox News should be ashamed of themselves!

Like Jerry said, popularity does not necessarily = good. I would venture to say that, globally speaking, mosquitoes are more popular than god. Everybody knows 'em. But that don't make 'em the Beatles.
