FORT LAUDERDALE - The Broward County School Board is giving a new assignment to teachers for the upcoming school year: Take care when you're handing out homework.

The School Board on Wednesday unanimously approved homework guidelines that urge teachers to assign academically challenging work while also being considerate about not assigning too much homework.

While the policy doesn't stipulate time limits for homework, the district's guidelines suggest 10 minutes of work for each grade level. A first grader's assignment would take about 10 minutes to finish, while a high school junior's total homework load would take 110 minutes

When I read the title of this article I thought, "wtf!?!" and was a little pissed. How could they be limiting kids homework! But on reading I think this is actually a good idea. It is just a guideline and I think 10 minutes of homework on average for each grade level is a pretty fair idea. I don't ever remember having that much homework in high school, or at least stuff that I actually had to work at.

The worst school system i have ever witnessed. I lived in Florida next to a state legislator who talked my mom into putting both my sister and i in the local public school. After 2 months and probably a dozen fights, i had to go to a freakin private bible thump school, of which the grade lower than mine had the exact same text i did in Pompano Beach Middle...

And property taxes were absolutely outrageous!

A high school junior having less that 2 hours of homework a night...really!? Kids already come out of high school not knowing enough and you want to exacerbate that? Ridiculous.

I couldn't tell you how long it took to do the homework I was given in school because I never once did any.

The same with me to. Some don't need the reinforcement and others do.

It's funny how you can spend 12 years in government school and not come out qualified to do anything specific but only need 4 years of college to get into a specific career field.

"I paid others to do my homework in grade school and high school. In college, I paid others to take my tests. I paid well, and graduated in the top 10% of my class, although I came out of college not knowing my ass from a hole in the ground. But perseverance, along with the payments of a lot of money, paid off, despite the fact that I learned absolutely nothing in life. That is why I am where I am today."

Why are you bitching about a bible thumping school? How much Bible thumping did they really do, be honest?

I went to a Lutheran School where the religion teacher thought any one other than Lutherans were in a cult.

my son drove me nuts
he refused to take notes in high school

That's cause high school in this country is pathetically easy. We should strengthen out educational standards.

Heck my high school wasn't easy. We had to do trig, Shakespeare and more. And this was a public school.

I would absolutely refuse to take notes in high school as well because I'm an auditory learner and if I was writing, I wasn't fully listening. And the thing is, I have a freakish memory for the things I hear.

One genius of an English teacher my junior year made the mistake of trying to "prove" that people forget 60% of what they hear in a day because I would refuse to take notes in her class.

To "prove" her point she decided to read two pages from a book in front of the class and have everyone take notes, knowing full well that I wouldn't, and then ask students to say all the things they remember from the passage.

Well, most kids replied with bits and pieces from the story, and when she got to me, I closed my eyes and recited the story verbatim.

Her jaw literally dropped and the rest of the class was like "Holy ****!".

She was not pleased and snipped, "Well, you'll forget 60% of it by tomorrow."

So my smartassed response was, "Did anyone else manage to get 100% of it today? I seriously doubt it. And I wonder how many people actually managed to get a full 40% of it into their notes, which is how much I should remember tomorrow if you are correct. But I'll even go a step further, I guarantee I can recite the whole thing again tommorow."

She said there was no way, so that created the challenge. I went through the rest of the day, reciting it in my head and walked into class the next day, stood on my desk and recited it perfectly.

That teacher HATED me.

The only thing you can say that is hard in high school is trig and calculus. The other stuff has been explained ad naseum that there is always a reference somewhere about it.

Trig...that's nothing more than sine and cosine. I took calculus my senior year in high school. Beginning calculus is 100% within the realm of high school....trig, that's for Jr. High.

Thats me to, I only take notes to stay awake in some classes now.

Math was not my strongest subject:3oops:

Math was not my strongest subject:3oops:

Math isn't pushed hard enough in school, that's how it becomes "not a strong subject". There's nothing tough about algebra or trigonometry or any of it. It's just rearranging a bunch of stuff or drawing pictures.

I think kids get it pretty easy these days because a lot of the feel good PC police got into the school districts. But while our college education is top notch (some of the best in the world), or standard K-12 is fairly weak. I think we need to step up the science, math, and art education in primary school. We may find that we ourselves start pumping out some better scientists and engineers if we do.

True. But even college in this country is a joke for the most part. When I studied physics, it was challenging, but when I switched my major to psyche, I swear I could count on one hand how many actual class sessions I went to per course (except the rare cases where attendance was mandatory and impacted my grade. I showed up for those classes and slept.) and I graduated with a 3.8 out of 4.0 so it's not like I scraped by or anything.

The art schools I went to were pretty rough and had a high drop out rate from the pressure.

It is absolute garbage that science is treated like an elective in most schools while literature of every freaking continent is considered words of the gods.

Yeesh I hated school so much.
