Stretched thin in Afghanistan and Iraq, the American military will begin recruiting skilled immigrants who are living in this country with temporary visas, offering them the chance to become United States citizens in as little as six months.

Immigrants who are permanent residents, with documents commonly known as green cards, have long been eligible to enlist. But the new effort, for the first time since the Vietnam War, will open the armed forces to temporary immigrants if they have lived in the United States for a minimum of two years, according to military officials familiar with the plan

Besides all the dividing... Didn't Rome fall also from too much foreign recruiting after their people where dishearted an not willing to join the militairy? I hope this doesn't start morphing into that.

This is a great idea IMO. If you are willing to protect and die for the U.S., why shouldn't you be made a citizen for it?

Absolutely right. This should have been the policy a long time ago.

That's a pretty damn, good point. I think it highlights how unpopular our own citizens think the war is, although.

One complaint I had was none of them paid taxes for 7 years and were never required to serve in the US military. Problem solved for both sides now, if the idea becomes law... They become citizens and they earn,(in a meaningful way),their citizenship. Become a tax payer and citizen in as little as 6 months.

Um just to let you know there are some 18 year olds that have never had jobs and paid taxes that served in the military, that means they didn't pay taxes for 18 years.

Just saying that is kind of a lame reason to be against immigrants serving in them military for citizenship.

Wasnt the Dream Act modeled after this concept?

I GOOGLED "dream act". It`s a twin brother from a different mother. I don`t care whos bill gets the nod, but I think this will solve a lot of future problems as relates to these newbies wanting to vote and influence law and politics in OUR country...become citizens and pay taxes.

You seem confused. They serve,...They become citizens...then pay taxes. This crap comeing to America protesting in the streets and picking up welfare checks, for 7 years,(while not paying taxes),doesn`t set well with me. The AMERICANS who are just 18, never worked,(thus never paid taxes), will pay taxes from their foxholes as has been the case for a long wrong time. I vote NO TAXES for active duty military personel.

The neocons' dream legislation is all coming true under Obama. The total destruction of America as a sovereign nation is now being engineered.

No I just was confused on your statement which you clarified.

So to clarify it more, why do you think reserve or guard duty members are less than active duty members to receive such a great tax cut when the guard and reserve are called upon to be deployed more than active members in times of crisis?

WE lost our sovereignty when the money whore globalists on both the right and left sold our jobs to the lowest bidders...thereby enslaveing the third world, and socializeing the rest of the world. :(

There you go...right again. NO TAXES for active duty, OR reserve military personel. Does that fix it ? I`m just trying to get it right for the brave men and women who get little more recognition otherwise. Throw active duty immigrant military in the mix too...!

Well for semantics sake I think you are meaning national guard as well right?

If so then I fully agree with you.

I would like to extend that to those who are retired military as well. I don't think you would have a problem with that either from what you said, but I am assuming a bit there, but I think I can bank on that one from you at least right and I would agree there as well.

I have one question - Where is the patriotism that makes a person want to join up?

The Ntl Guard rocks and yes they belong in the group of nontax payers. I like your idea of no taxes at all for the retired personel. They worked in most cases at reduced pay rates for 20 or more years. Things are back on the upswing for veterans and their veteran benefits in this country. It was almost like they were hated for a while as nearly all of their benefits were slashed in the last gtr of the last century. I hope those days are more than just,"figuratively",behind us.

If you mean the ,"patriotism", of the prospective immigrant enlisties, that would be the sparkle in their eye at haveing an opportunity to become a real US citizen, VS a liberal, after 7 years of no taxes and tons of welfare. ;)

Sometimes it is patriotism and sometimes it what the military can give them.

I joined for patriotism, but I have to say no matter what the reason you joined up (whether it be for patriotism or what the government can give you) to have a government have a complete say in where you go and what you do says a lot ab out what you are willing to go through for this country no matter why you signed up.

To complete that tour of duty says a lot about ones character, no matter why they signed up.

I love this idea, all illegals should prove their loyalty by throwing themselves on a land mine.

The minute one signs their name on the line.

No matter what makes a person join, the minute they go through the training, shows their willingness to comitt to something bigger than themselves.

God, that would be friggin sweet.

Oh yeah, we can just put them all on the front lines, and if they survive, they are american citizens.....Kind of like they did the blacks in the vietnam war....

Gimme a break.. This is just a failed attempt to not show how bad recruitment levels are & show that "hey, they are all good people. We should just open our hearts adn let em all come in and take our jobs...

You know, they aren't just picking fruit anymore...

Just end the frigging wars......Just bring em home!!!!

That's if you feel all illegal immigrants will be put in the front lines. There are MANY MANY people that can qualify for other positions other than front line duties.

As long as they are here legally when they enlist I do not care if they are offered citizenship in return. If they are here illegally then they should get one way ticket to the furthest point in their country.
