House OKs $787B stimulus bill with GOP opposition

So in general if you read an 1100 page bill, and small parts of it is changed, and which parts changed is mentioned in a side document(normal routine), then you go ahead and re-read the whole 1100 pages, instead of reading the parts that has changed or the chapters those parts belong to?

Sections are listed as "amended" and content is listed and found under the annex. But chapters and specific paragraphs are not. This is a bill, not an affidavit or court order so the amended details are not meant to be specific and require complete reading (that statement scares me). That means trying to find them by hand and reading through everything to make sure that specific wording does not allow for extra provisions, etc. Usually this is given in Word format which allows for easy searching. Unfortunately, this time around the documents were in .PDF format which makes computer searching impossible.

When a committee concludes its markup, any committee member may move to order the measure reported to the Senate. A committee has several options for the form in which the a measure is ordered reported. It may be reported with no changes, with amendments to various sections adopted in markup, or with one amendment in the nature of a substitute. In addition, a Senate committee is authorized to report an original bill that embodies a text decided upon in markup.

When a committee reports a measure, it generally prepares an accompanying written report that describes the purposes and provisions of the measure (note the measure itself ie. the bill). If a report is submitted, Senate rules and statutes require the inclusion of such components as records of roll-call votes cast in committee, cost estimates, a statement of regulatory impact, and the specific changes the legislation would make to existing law. Committee members are also entitled to at least three days to prepare supplementary, minority, or additional views for inclusion in the report.
U.S. Senate: Legislation & Records Home > Legislative Process > Senate Legislative Process - Prime example. Here's two quoted paragraphs out of 11 pages. Go find them.

So now you have to do your research and confirm interpretations within 12hrs after release. Thats a whole lot of coffee right there.

In short, this was a poor example of transparency thats going to bite the Dems in the butt. The media is going to have to go into overtime to cover them in the future. I can only hope that the recovery which should have taken roughly 2 years won't be stalled or prolonged by this bill. Although I get the feeling that politicians will milk the "doom and gloom" for a while.

where's your evidence that "no one has read it"?
Boner and Limpbough said so, therefore it must be so. Disregarding the fact that it's been dissected by the Repubs to find their "pork" talking points... The only thing that needs to be read from the last version are the new changes. Repubs are not being truthful, as usual.

Who would have thought that the cheaper of the 2 stimulus bills would have been from the Democrats.....

$787 billion that the US do not have. Smart move

Better than bailouts however, which is just throwing away money you didn't have into the flames.

I wonder how many generations that will suffer for the past generation..
That's what we've been asking since the Iraq Conflict began.

Like I said before, if the repubs think they can waste the surplus we had going from Clinton and turn it into the biggest national debt in the shortest period of time in our Country's history then they have nothing to bitch about when the democrats want spend money to fix what they broke and neglected. ;)

Frankly I think the American people should not vote for a republican again until we erase the debt they created. THEN, they might get another shot at running things into the ground.

Can any of the Obamaphile true believers tell me why the bill is not available for you or I to read as promised by Obama?

Can you find me one senator, house member, who has claimed to have read it.

You should be disgusted. But as a true believer, you are not.

Pathetic as usual.

Certainly. I could say the same in a lot of case, but I just was disappointed by you, because I expected more from you than groundless post/opinion/personal attacks..

I would not be surprised if it came from hordes of other people, but from you
you're kidding right?

You're a liar. This bill hasn't been available to read for over a week. It's been redacted several times, and the final version wasn't available until 12 hours prior to the vote.

Obama's campaign promise was transparency. He would make sure, bills would be posted in their entirety, on his website for the American people to read, 5 days prior to it being voted on.

Obama's been in office less than a month, and he's lied about everything so far.

However, he never said that this could be used by the Repubs as a tactic to stall things. 'Oh, someone changed a punctuation mark so we need to repost it and reread it', for another 5 days... rinse, repeat.

The Bill has been gone over with a fine tooth comb and the only thing that needs reading are the changes. The changes are not all 1100 pages... sounds like the repubs are the liars. But who's surprised...

This is ridiculous a single person can not possibly read most legislation or for that matter do all the research required to understand a single bill. That's why they have aides who help them with such matters. Specially when a bill is over 2-300 pages long.
never mind

Republicans did good in this.

They almost universally opposed what is widely seen as little more then a Pork Bill being portrayed as a "stimulus".

While much of the media has been hyping it as the OBAMA Plan, Or Obama's big win, etc.

In less then a month the Republicans turned the tables on the messiah and now have him in a corner. Hopefully they will keep it up and block/impede as many of his policies as possible.

Widely seen? How wide is wide, because I see polls showing near 70% support for it. Basically, little more than the Bush base is against it.

That's what the American people voted repubs out of office for, eh? So that the remaining repubs could block what the President they just elected wants to do... cons never learn.

The people who support this **** are the same people who trusted the government could effectively prevent depressions....

A ten year stimulus package is an oxymoron.

Great !! How about a link to the document listing all the changes !!

Government spending does not equal fiscal stimulus.

Can you explain the difference? The money has to go into the pockets of someone who will in turn spend it thus stimulating the economy.
