Republican Sen. Judd Gregg has withdrawn his nomination for U.S. commerce secretary.
Republican Sen. Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination to be President Obama's commerce secretary on Thursday, citing "irresolvable conflicts" over issues like the economic stimulus package and the Census.
In doing so, the New Hampshire senator became the first Cabinet-level nominee to withdraw his name in protest.
"It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me," Gregg said in a written statement.
After Gregg's nomination, it was announced that the core duty of the 2010 Census was being removed from his purview and would be administered from the West Wing of the White House, implying that Rahm Emanuel would be in charge. This raises questions because this is a usurpation of the core function of the Commerce Dept, which Gregg would oversee. Some Democrats did not trust a conservative Republican to have that oversight of the Census.
More than $2-Billion is in the Stimulus Bill for ACORN, and with Obama being first of all a Community Organizer, and ACORN the definitive Community Organization, many Republicans are concerned that some inner city census data will be "estimated" rather than by actual head count.
