Gregg withdraws as commerce secretary nominee: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew his nomination as commerce secretary Thursday, citing "irresolvable conflicts" with President Barack Obama's handling of the economic stimulus and 2010 census.

"We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy," Gregg said in a statement released by his Senate office.

Gregg, 61, is a former New Hampshire governor who previously served in the House. He has been in the Senate since 1993 and currently serves as the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, where he is known as a crusader against big spending.

He was Obama's second choice to fill the Commerce portfolio.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew several weeks ago in the wake of a grand jury investigation into alleged wrongdoing involving state contracts. He has not been implicated personally.

In his statement, Gregg thanked Obama for the nomination, and said, "I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle."

In citing the stimulus and census, he said, "Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy."

The unexpected withdrawal marked the latest setback for Obama in his attempt to build a Cabinet.

...

The Commerce Department has jurisdiction over the Census Bureau, and the administration recently took steps to assert greater control. Republicans have harshly criticized the decision, saying it was an attempt to politicize the once-in-a-decade event.

And from his statement:

“As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.”

Kind of sad that you have to include that nowadays.

Well good to see he decided that he really wasn't that liberal I suppose...

And what do you expect? With Obama's track record of dubious acquaintances is it a shock his nominees are so... fallible?

Guess Obama is finding out the hard way.

Good riddance. The one point where I disagree with Obama is that he believes he can work with Republicans and create a bipartisan government. I believe Republicans are rabid dogs, cannot be trusted, and should not be allowed anywhere near a position of responsibility.

Not all Republicans are bad, as you assert, just as not all Democrats are good, if that is what you also feel. I have jumped on some of the more rabid Republican partisans already. Now it is your turn.

Part of the problem with partisanship is YOU. If you think partisans are like rabid dogs, then you need to look in a mirror. After that, you can take a rabies shot. You need one.

You know, you are right danarhea. Here's the thing. I started a thread yesterday ripping Pat Leahy and despite not using the word kryponite, it was avoided like the plague. I don't think bipartisanship is possible. It's both side's fault. The only way to accomplish bipartisanship is to put a third party in power. Jesse Ventura united dems and reps against him. All these idiots know is attack, attack, attack. Reagan had a point when he wish aliens would attack us as it would unite us. We are a warring species seeking dominance. We need someone to vilify as part of our group dynamic. Unfortunately, there isn't enough self esteem for everyone to feel good about themselves unless they are tearing down someone else.

This is why you get attacked by both sides.

With an attitude like that, I'm glad you're nowhere near a position of responsibility.

I thought that was what mexicans and muslims were for.

And he claims to be "centrist". :rofl

For some reality matters more then the facade.

Mouthfoamer on aisle 3, bring a mop. Come on dude, you need to chill. Rabid dogs.....hahahahahah :rofl

There's a reason for that. Many Democrats are way more angry about Republican activities than I am. That puts me in the middle. Next time your party is in a position to discuss a "permanent Republican majority", you think about the harvest you are currently reaping. This is what you get for trying to shut Democrats out of the governing process. If you can't play nice, you don't get to play at all.

Very centrist of you.

I bet many communists were more virulent than Stalin, too.

lol

So, if the Republicans try to shut the Democrats out, the Democrats will teach them a lesson by doing the exact same thing?

You should be a peacemaker in Gaza with brilliant insight like that.

100% Smoke screen. He has no intention of "working with" republicans. It's all "show time", and Gregg seems to have woken up and noticed he was nothing more than an adornment.

"I won".

Perhaps Gregg was pushed out because his taxes were in order? LOL.
It would have reflected poorly on the Gangsta Hoopa Administration.

Is this because Republicans, when they send troops to battle, actually believe in the vote, support the troops, the mission, the president... and victory?

Unlike Democrats who vote to send troops into battle and then crap on the troops, crap on the mission, crap on the president, and wave the white flag of retreat when it is politically expedient?

Tell me who is trustworthy? A party that votes on principle, or one that would send troops into battle because of political expediency?

Hmmm, I wonder what he plans to do?

As far as I'm concerned all Democrats should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Seriously, though, you made an incorrect assumption about "my party", as it is the Conservative Party, not the GOP.

That said, all Liberals should be wiped off the face of the earth, or at least sent to Europe.

Is this your "I know you are but, what am I", 4th grade retort? :doh

It seems MOST of America feels just this way about Republicans and Conservatives, as their votes illustrate. So, if each side got their wish all the Conservatives would be gone with nothing but Dems left. :2rofll: :2rofll: :2rofll:

Even liberal California voted conservative when they were able to do so based on issues. And by "most", I assume that you meant the percentage who voted for Obama, which was about 51%. So if y'all want to come after the remainder, then by all means bring it on. After all, we've got the guns.

Umm, no. It seems that MOST of America feels that voting for the leader of their nation is like voting for their top pick in American Idol as their interviews and votes illustrate.

Yep, they know Palin had six-figures in clothes purchased (but not that the RNC purchased them), yet the cult followers have little idea what "Change" and "Hope" mean, and that "Unity" means compliance for the greater socialist good.

Only through ignorance can you piss away the foundation of the greatest country known to mankind.

53% ensured we will be pissing non-stop downwind. Problem is the ocean of urine waiting to be cleaned up when this socialist skit comes to an end.

Proposition 8.

I think you guys are missing the most unusual part of this.

They moved they census from the commerce department to the white house.

The census helps decide if we new voting districts.

Just my speculation, but maybe the Obama team will muddle the census to gain more power for Democrats. Gregg may not have wanted to have anything to do with that.
