Iridium Satellite Collides With Russian Craft

Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) "-- An Iridium World Communications Inc. satellite collided with a Russian satellite in space yesterday, creating a cloud of wreckage, CBS News reported.

Iridiumís satellites orbit at about 485 miles (780 kilometers) above the Earthís surface, while the International Space Station orbits at 215 miles, according to CBS."

Collisions of Satellites with debris in orbit is one thing, but one-on-one collisions of satellites; I thought was so unlikely as to be almost impossible, and here we have one!

Unfortunately we are gathering quite a large amount of trash up there, especially in the low earth orbit. Satellite collisions are rare for now, but this collision produced a ton of debris which is now flying around space in orbit around the earth, and as more and more trash piles up crap like this will become more and more likely.

We're gonna need some space trashmen.

    hahaha

I hope Iridium sent a fax to Moscow that said "Owned".

    Are these Satellites insured?

About 20 years ago, there was a short-lived sci-fi situation comedy show on TV called Quark, about a space garbageman. It's kind of funny how sometimes comedy can end up being prophetic. LOL.

Are the Iridium satellites even used? Iridium went out of business a long time ago. I think both these objects were space junk even before they collided.

I can't remember which one was the magazine for this reference, but I saw a picture taken from outer space, were the satellites appeared as hundreds of luminous tiny stars around the earth. It was a beautiful picture.
