the government already has a racket in the hair industry: cosmetology licenses.

They teach you basically nothing in hair school...it really doesn't matter where you go, it's a worthless endeavor pretty much across the board.

You learn how to do hair by assisting at a studio and basically being taught by the people that already work there.

So why do people go to beauty school?

Because it's illegal (in a lot of states, including NY and PA but not NJ, I think) to operate without a cosmetology license...which you can only get from...a beauty school.

And beauty schools have to...pay big piles of money to the government to be "certified".

    It's bull****.
And why does your tone suggest that you do not care about children?

I would have agreed to this statement several weeks ago, but with Michael Steele at the helm of the RNC now, there's optimism in them thar hills.

His first order of business was to fire everyone, that was an impressive start, IMO.

Let's see how Steele pulls it together, and what role Jindal and Palin have in shaping the Republican party. Hopefully, they get back to basics.

Really!? I know we're in an economic crunch, but should the cities be throwing more tax on the People because of it? If the city is in dire need of money, it can damned well cut spending, they don't need to try to emulate NYC (which according to the article already has this sort of tax). It's like California. It alone had one of the higher global GDPs and it's out of money. How is it out of money? Reckless spending. The people pay enough to the government, we're feeling a huge pinch brought in part by lack regulation and irresponsible lending practices. Government's fault, and who has to pay? We do.

Government is getting well to big for its britches and I think we're going to see that fact well demonstrated during this time of economic hardships.
My favorite saying (forgot who said it) is that government needs to be shrunk to the size where it can fit in a bathtub, and then drowned.

As for the beauty tax, I'm not worried. I'm ugly as hell. LOL.

The question I have is why barbershops and salons were exempted from charging sales tax in the first place. That seems pretty stupid to me.

Yes, because every other business that has ever had to pay sales tax has been forced out of business.

Why should barbers and hair stylists get special tax advantages?
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

That is what you call "Change".
It is the spirit of "Change".

Government knows best, you're just a drone for the state.

History clearly shows people will reduce the activity being taxed, and just as the luxury tax was imposed during The Clinton's reign, the boating industry tanked and they had to quietly repeal the tax. There will be black markets. people will skirt government penalties. Just ask Geithner, Rangel, Daschle, Killefer, Richardson... to name but a few.

Eventually we will get somebody in there that will slash taxes... but first we have to go through the Carteresque pain that is mounting. The only good thing coming from this is Obama is left standing alone holding the bag of feces. It's his... all his. It's his page in history. Obama and Marx... Obama and Chirac... Obama and Schroeder... Obama and Trudeau. What lovely company he keeps.

We know the Dems won't be affected by the tax increases... they don't pay them.

You know... when I overextend my budget, I cut spending. I don't go try and steal money from someone else to pay my bills.

****ing government can do the same.
