PETA dresses in KKK garb outside Westminster Dog Show

    By Gene Farris, USA TODAY
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals knows how to grab attention. And show off its laundry.
The animal rights group, which every year stages a protest at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, had two of its members dress in Ku Klux Klan garb outside Madison Square Garden on Monday.
Their goal, according to a post on the PETA website, was to draw a parallel between the KKK and the American Kennel Club. "Obviously it's an uncomfortable comparison," PETA spokesman Michael McGraw told the Associated Press.
But the AKC is trying to create a "master race" when it comes to pure-bred dogs, he added. "It's a very apt comparison."
The group passed out brochures implying the Klan and AKC have the goal of "pure bloodlines" in common.

"I can't speak for everyone, but the vast majority of the people exhibiting and handling and showing at Westminster are more interested in the health of dogs than anything else," Westminster spokesman David Frei told the AP.
I've been to dog shows, and the ethical breeders that I have met are interested in breeding healthy animals asided for the business aspect.

So how does pureblood dog breeding equate to unethical treatment of animals?

PETA is like the ACLU. Good intent, lousy execution.

    I question the good intent.

Absolutely nothing surprises me about them anymore after the absurdity of the Sea Kitten campaign.

Can't say I disagree, at least as far as PETA goes.

The ethical treatment of animals is a rightful cause IMO and there should be organizations that responsibly monitor this area, unfortunately PETA's track record has been that of media whoring (like this event) and shock tactics which makes them a disreputable organization IMO.

Without looking anything up, I'd guess:

    1) Tail and ear snipping
    2) Dogs that are subjected to excess grooming, and "hair cuts" that are more for estetics rather than comfort.
    3) Dogs that are overbred. In order to find the perfect dog, one might have to breed hundreds, which of course leads to the problem of overpopulation.

Ohhhh... edited to add that some breeds have been "honed" through the years to exaggerate certain features. This has caused major medical problems with certain breeds.

BTW, I'm no PETA apologist. I think they are way too extreme, to say the least. But I do think the show dog world is not best model of perfect pet ownership.

No men are anywhere, and Im allowed to go in, because Im the owner of the pageant and therefore Im inspecting it, Trump said... Is everyone OK? You know, theyre standing there with no clothes. Is everybody OK? And you see these incredible looking women, and so I sort of get away with things like that.

I don't think the public is always the best example of pet ownership.

What does that have to do with this topic?
