    We Are All Socialists Now

We Are All Socialists Now | Newsweek Business | Newsweek.com

The interview was nearly over. on the Fox News Channel last Wednesday evening, Sean Hannity was coming to the end of a segment with Indiana Congressman Mike Pence, the chair of the House Republican Conference and a vociferous foe of President Obama's nearly $1 trillion stimulus bill. How, Pence had asked rhetorically, was $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts going to put people back to work in Indiana? How would $20 million for "fish passage barriers" (a provision to pay for the removal of barriers in rivers and streams so that fish could migrate freely) help create jobs? Hannity could not have agreed more. "It is … the European Socialist Act of 2009," the host said, signing off. "We're counting on you to stop it. Thank you, congressman."
If we fail to acknowledge the reality of the growing role of government in the economy, insisting instead on fighting 21st-century wars with 20th-century terms and tactics, then we are doomed to a fractious and unedifying debate. The sooner we understand where we truly stand, the sooner we can think more clearly about how to use government in today's world.

As the Obama administration presses the largest fiscal bill in American history, caps the salaries of executives at institutions receiving federal aid at $500,000 and introduces a new plan to rescue the banking industry, the unemployment rate is at its highest in 16 years. The Dow has slumped to 1998 levels, and last year mortgage foreclosures rose 81 percent.
The Obama administration is caught in a paradox. It must borrow and spend to fix a crisis created by too much borrowing and spending. Having pumped the economy up with a stimulus, the president will have to cut the growth of entitlement spending by holding down health care and retirement costs and still invest in ways that will produce long-term growth. Obama talks of the need for smart government. To get the balance between America and France right, the new president will need all the smarts he can summon.
    What do you think?
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.

I think that the US has a mixed economy, thank goodness, and I'm relieved to hear that no one is advancing or even advocating public ownership of the means of production.

    And, the question I have:
20th century terms... as found in things like the Geneva Conventions, which are isintended to cover warfare between states and the actors thereof rather than irregular members of international organziations that fight outside of state sanction?

Nah - probably not THOSE terms.

Will people ever learn from history?

    Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 – December 19, 1968)
was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.

The Socialist Party candidate for President of the US, Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."

There's nothing wrong with Norman Thomas :\
"I do not underestimate the ability of fanatical groups of terrorists to kill and destroy, but they do not threaten the life of the nation. Whether we would survive Hitler hung in the balance, but there is no doubt that we shall survive al-Qa'ida." -- Lord Hoffmann

    Победа здесь! Victory is Ours!

Seriously, though, Eugene Debs kicked Norman Thomas' ass as far as American Socialists go.

We are not all socialists now.

We, a conservative leaning country are captive of a group of socialist for the short term. They can and most likely will do great damage. Let them hold the bag. They want socialism, they have the votes, let them carry the water.

We are not all socialists now, and there is nothing saying representatives have to vote for it.

Let the socialists identify themselves and be associated with the likes of... the most socialist member of the Senate as President, and another of the same cloth with questionable brain power as second. Pelosi and Reid as Congressional Leaders!

That is one Hard Core group of Leftists. The supporting cast is just as looney.
Their Marxist vision need not be followed.

    What should Obama do?

He should cut taxes. Lots of taxes.
    Individual and corporate.
In fact they should revise and simplify the tax code.
Ask Daschle, Killefer and Geithner. Maybe Richards and Rangel too.

He should cut regulations. Lots of Regulations.
He should cut government or at least freeze its growth for his four years.
he should move quickly to secure future native fuel sources; ANWAR and ocean drilling.
He should move to have refineries built.
He should move to increase funding for our military, not a 10% cut during war on two major fronts.

He should unleash the individuals and their wealth by reducing the burdens of government.

    He should do it Now.

It's worked every time it has been tried.
Even JFK (R-MA) understood this and let it be known loud and clear.

We the people are the solution.
Not the lazy, middle man, bureaucratic behemoth, that is the definition of waste... our Federal Government... that is not the solution. Never has been, never will be.
