This seems completely plausible, but obesity is not caused by a discrete thing that can be precisely targeted, while cigarette smoking is.

    Jobs
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

HI! I'm the FDA. I see we haven't met before.

You do know that they do this all the time, right?

I wish for a world where people like me aren't stuck paying for the healthcare of people who end up as drains on the system because of their cigarette smoking. If that means that people who choose to smoke pay an extra buck a pack, I'm okay with that.

So you trust the FDA with your body? Do you even know the crap you consume that should not pass as real food?

Nothing good is associated with smoking cigarettes, nothing. It's poison. It's a killer. How many products in America are sold for consumption with warnings that continued use of the product will kill you?
But the same can be said for people who eat junk food and also feed it to their kids! Same could be said about drinkers.

Yes. It relaxes this consumer and calms my nerves. Now I know that there are people that claim that cigs. do not calm the nerves but make em worse but I am proof that it helps calm me down. So you could say that they aid me in not having a breakdown. Having said all this don't you dare try to attack my mental health or anything else buster!

Do you not see the difference between trusting the FDA to set a minimum baseline and trusting the FDA to decide what I will eat?

They also help you lose weight. Nobody is saying that there aren't some incidental quasi-positive side effects, we're simply pointing out that that's like saying that smoking meth will help you lose weight - it's a pretty inefficient way to reach the end goal. I bet you could get the same calming effect in a much healthier fashion.

Also, FWIW, you do know that it's the addictive ingredients in the cigarettes that is making you crave the cigarette to calm down in the first place, right? It's like saying that you need to drink because it helps with the rehab shakes.

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, and there are nicotine-based drugs available for weight loss in correlation with studies that have been done. So, continuing to smoke a cigarette still is no excuse. Another reason why smokers lose weight is because many use their workbreaks to light up instead of eating.

I've also read a couple of studies which suggest that nicotine may partially block insulin, but this hasn't been confirmed. If it's true, then your body will always have an elevated glucose level, which means your body will never tell you that you're hungry even if you haven't eaten in a while.

At any rate, the weight loss that smoking causes is not healthy. There are better ways to do it.
