BEIJING – Days before China's human rights record comes under scrutiny before a key U.N. panel, the government's grip on dissent seems as firm as ever.

Government critics have been rounded up and some imprisoned on vaguely defined state security charges. Corruption whistle-blowers have been bundled away, while discussion of sensitive political and social topics on the Internet remains tightly policed.

"China's rights record remains a matter of grave concern," said Nicholas Bequelin, Asia researcher for New York-based Human Rights Watch.

"No country has a perfect human rights record, but the problem with China is that it jails people who expose violations, maintains absolute censorship over state media and prevents victims of human rights abuses from finding justice," he said.

We know China's record is disgusting. Sadly, irresonsible US economic policies, which are only going to be excaerbated under Obama, are putting the US in a position where they can't really do too much to condemn these actions.

I completely agree with the man who recently threw a show at Premier Wen. It is about time for the West to stand up to the dictators in Beiping.

There are what - 1 billion citizens of China?

How many are permitted to post here at Debate Politics?

That alone should tell you something :(

Amazing that they don't have their paid spammers on here like they do on other sites on the web.

But, on an unrelated note - if China shows up in Asia Group 1 in the Davis Cup again, Taiwan can always help bounce them back down to Group 2 ... again.

Wow, attacking obama and standing up to beijing all in one stance.
Asside from the usual hyperbolic hysteria that you use for plainly ignorant people with those key words for resonance - I'm curious, just how do you propose t "stand up to the dictators of Beijing"?

The first ignorant person steps up.
1. Of course we all know that everyone in the whole world speaks English and is fluent in reading and writing english.
2. with all the vial hatred of I'm not surprised that people in China wouldn't bother posting here. Should anyone there post any dissenting opinion to that of the board, they'll get a barage of nasties from the board as well as a slur of racist slandar against that go completely "un-noticed"
3. Yes, because we all know just how keen Chinese are to post on the world wide popular debate politics right?

So no, that alone doesn't say squat other than plain simple ignorance.

For the record, this site is not in anyway shape or form "censored" in china as you all here so self-righteously assume.
But that won't stop the assumptions and further self endowment of superiority.

I'm curious jfuh. Do you consider me one of those "plainly ignorant people"?

{edit} He obviously does.

From what you've posted on "that alone should say something" yes, by all means - at least on this subject quite so.

If anyone is ignorant here it is you. Your attacking style alone brands you.

Oh right, this is when you turn around into the vicitimization strategy?
I'm sorry, but on a SINGULAR instance and then stating that oh yeah, the censorship.
You've been to China then? Perhaps perhaps not, have you tried to access DP while in China? I have without even the slightest hitch.
Maybe I should make a post or two next time just to prove while you check the IP logs.

If you're going to be posting rubbish that stems only from a singular instance of "there are no one in china that posts here" and conclude from such that it's because of censorship, don't be so surprised as to be called ignorant.

Calling a person ignorant is not an attack, you don't know you don't know - it doesn't change what I've said as being true.
the OP has quite a long history of posting words for the sake of resonnance to those who are ignorant - now if you want to test it, go ahead, journey to China and test for yourself.
Otherwise yes I will be calling you ignorant.

I know the IPs of every DP member.

I can't think of even one who regularly posts from mainland China.

Very strange for such an "open country" with a billion people.

Posting or not posting on this site doesn't mean squat.

But interesting choice of word you use "I can't think of even one who regularly posts from mainland China."
Seems to suggest that there are, they just don't post often, which would lean more weight to my argument 3.

BTW, I never argued that China was an open society, so don't put words in my mouth.

Perhaps...

Before I came to DP I was one of the Owners of the largest chatroom at MSN which was also international. 5,000-10,000 room visitors per day every day.

Once again, I can't recall even one visitor from China.

Which means what?

Hey, I don't see any posters from Lithuania here, I don't see any posters from the netherlands here I don't see any from iceland, sweeden, switzerland, romania, spain, italy - yeah that must mean something must mean their nations censor.
Your pool is simply too small.
Arguments 1, 2 and 3 (substitute dp with your MSN chatroom).

I've never posted in your chatroom or at very least I know I've never posted in an MSN chatroom before. OMG yes, that MUST mean something, yes I must be censored. Seriously no one is that conceited.

Actually, there are posting members here at DP from each of the various nations you mentioned above.

See the blips on mainland China? Those are all spam-bot accounts that I haven't gotten around to banning yet. There is no member posting here from mainland China. As was evident during the Summer Olympic Games, many Chinese can speak at least a rudamentary English.

Dismiss it all you want, but there is little doubt that the government of China monitors, filters, and blocks Internet access.

Internet censorship in the People's Republic of China is conducted under a wide variety of laws and administrative regulations. In accordance with these laws, more than sixty Internet regulations have been made by the People's Republic of China (PRC) government, and censorship systems are vigorously implemented by provincial branches of state-owned ISPs, business companies, and organizations.[1][2]

The apparatus of the PRC's Internet repression is considered more extensive and more advanced than in any other country in the world. The regime not only blocks website content but also monitors the internet access of individuals. Amnesty International notes that China “has the largest recorded number of imprisoned journalists and cyber-dissidents in the world.”

Wait and you would know this how?
Maybe because they posted on this site?
Which seems to lean more to my argument even more.

Who's denied such?
However that's not what you said.

How can they both be posting during last summer yet then not permitted to post?
Keep drinking the koolaid.

The first ignorant person steps up.

And a usual Jfuh personal attack for someone DARING to attack the chinese government.

1. Of course we all know that everyone in the whole world speaks English and is fluent in reading and writing english.

Of course you are right, no one in china speaks english and if any of the billion did, they would not happen on DP by chance....

Defense #2 for the jack boots in the chinese government.

2. with all the vial hatred of I'm not surprised that people in China wouldn't bother posting here. Should anyone there post any dissenting opinion to that of the board, they'll get a barage of nasties from the board as well as a slur of racist slandar against that go completely "un-noticed"

Once again Jfuh accuses people of racism for daring to critisize the jack boots in the chinese government.

3. Yes, because we all know just how keen Chinese are to post on the world wide popular debate politics right?

I have known a couple. Why wouldn't a few exist. Stop making excuses for the jack boots in the chinese government by bashing chinese people.

Aren't you of chinese decent. And look YOU post here. FAIL.

Prove it is not censored by the Chinese government.

We will wait.

Jfuh,

I've been to China on a few occasions. While many of the major news sites i.e., CNN and The New York Times, are accessible, those that have a lot of user-generated content i.e., sites hosted by GoDaddy or Geocities are not always accessible. Things are continuing to change, so that situation may also change in the future.

Speaking of change: One of Beijing's hutongs. Beijing's hutongs are continuing to disappear as the city replaces them with modern commercial and residential districts.

Point is not ALWAYS accessable. Often times due to the rediculousness of servers in China just aren't decent enough to handle the capacity. Other times its because of censorship.
The argument I've made toward tasha is the painting of one large brush stroke just on what she herself personally has seen from her perspective. Both narrowminded and conceited to think that yes of course they'd all be posting on these boards.

That is a HUGE shame.

Because that is how I arranged it.

You obviously have no idea of Administrator powers.
If this is sarcasm, it's in poor taste.
If not, then YOU are the censor. Yeah it says a lot, seems you're the one who's preventing one of the core beliefs of this site "free speech".

Yes, the quality at Debate Politics is not what it could be , in other words, a waste of time..
And, remember, "bad habits die hard"..
Just give the Chinese more time, a lot more time.
Our trade with them will accelerate the process..
