GOP Opposes Pay Limits On Bailed-Out Bankers

*Disclaimer: This article if off of Huffington Post, and while I normally wouldn't post this as actual news, the quotes from the Republican politicians are what made me go forward with it. Read the article and you'll see what I mean.

GOP Opposes Pay Limits On Bailed-Out Bankers

Senate Minority Leader Jon Kyl (R-AZ) blamed the "tone deaf" bankers for creating the political environment that allowed Obama to call for a cap.

"Because of their excesses, very bad things begin to happen, like the United States government telling a company what it can pay its employees. That's not a good thing in America,"
"What executives have done is troubling, but it's equally troubling to have government telling shareholders how much they can pay the executives," said Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL).
In the end, this quote says it all:
Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) said, "Some of the things some of these bank executives have been doing demonstrates they have a tin ear. At the same time, I'm generally troubled by wage and price control, no matter how logical it may appear."
The funny thing is that I'm sure nobody is shocked that they oppose something based on ideology regardless of what reason dictates. That's why the republicans lost the last 2 elections so badly.

The article seems to indicate that the republicans are not unified on this front. Although I can understand their reservations, its quite clear that the paradigm has shifted. Its fine to say "I don't feel comfortable in using the government to limit private business" but it doesn't hold water when you ignored tax payers claim of "I don't feel comfortable giving billions of taxpayer dollars to failed banks." The moment a company accepts a single dollar in corporate welfare, it loses the right to avoid government interference.

I agree, it does look like there is not a united front. I would not have posted the title I did if not for the *breaking news* forum rules.

There are enough of them however to highlight the problem a significant portion of the republican party suffers from. Not all, but certainly not rare either.
