Senate rejects move to kill 'Buy American' clause, but softens provision

Patriotism is more that just waving a flag and saying I support the military. I guess as long as idiots buy that it is enough they will continue to support these scum who sell our jobs down the river, especially those who do it at the expense of tax payers. American tax payer money should not be used to prop up jobs in other countries. If this is supposed to be a economic stimulus bill it should help American jobs not those in Europe and other parts of the world. Tax dollars shouldn't be used to buy foreign goods when we have companies in the USA that produces those goods.Tax dollars shouldn't be used to employ foreigners at call centers when we have Americans who need jobs. Tax dollars shouldn't be used to hire foreigners to make our national monument(see MLK jr. monument story) when we have artist and architects here in the USA who can do those things.

Senate rejects McCain's amendment to kill 'Buy American' clause
Republican Senator John McCain introduced legislation on Wednesday to strip the "Buy American" provision in the huge U.S. stimulus bill, according to reports.

"I've got an amendment to try to kill it," the former presidential candidate told AFP shortly after introducing the measure.

The bailout bill is meant to help pull America out of recession by stimulating the economy and creating jobs. In its current form, it requires that all steel and iron used for infrastructure projects funded through the stimulation package be U.S. made.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Re: McCain introduces amendment to help foreign steel workers.

Earlier in the day, the Arizona senator had said that he felt the protectionist language was "ignoring the lessons of history."
"We canít have this kind of protectionism. It hasnít worked in the past. It wonít work now," he said.

    McCain is right.
If they don't remove this provision it will hurt the U.S.

    Removing it is Patriotic.

Allowing tax dollars to be used to aid foreign workers over American workers and for the encouragement of outsourcing is more unpatriotic. The idea that this provision will hurt the US is a load of globalist/anti-American pieces of **** crap.

The only thing this buy American first amendment does is make sure that the steel used in tax payer federally funded infrastructures use steel made in the US. It does not ban a private company doing work from another private company from using foreign made steel. McCain like every other globalist is a piece of anti-American **** for trying to make sure our tax dollars are being used to further encourage outsourcing.

Senate eases 'Buy American' clause in stimulus - CNN.com
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate agreed Wednesday to soften a "Buy American" provision in its economic stimulus package, clarifying that the clause will not override existing U.S. trade treaties.
Now that was an appropriate addition.

After the stock market crash of 1929, Hoover attempted the same thing with the Smoot-Hawley Act, which was supposed to encourage buying American by imposing tariffs on foreign goods. That turned out to be a contributing factor in making the Great Depression as bad as it was.

Economic protectionism is the absolute worst thing our government could do at a time like this (well, besides writing up a massive stimulus bill). We do NOT want to set off a trade war between us and other ailing economies around the world. Free market economics do not stop working once they cross a border. All of this is academic anyway; the bill is LADEN with pork and founded on the flawed theory of government-induced stimulation. This plan is doomed to fail regardless of how its implemented.

Hoover did not attempt the same thing, the Smoot-Hawley Act was a tariff increase that as far as I was know was imposed on all imports. The only thing the buy American first provision does is say that American steel will be used for federal tax payer funded infrastructure products stipulated by the stimulus bill. It is not a trade a barrier ,it does not ban, impede or discourage American companies who are doing business with other American companies from using foreign steel.
