On a tough day, Obama escapes for a while

You're missing the point, its not the fact that he stepped out that's t he problem. Its the fact that he represents the people of the USA, to our allies and our enemies. Politics is largely about rhetoric and image. No matter how you spin it, he used poor judgment in making such a comment. There are many other ways to appear "more human" to please the populace, all of which do not send subtle signals weakness.

I think its entirely appropriate to have higher standards for the president than me. What do you think?

I expect the POTUS to be not so nitpicky and petty. How's that for a higher standard?

I'm being reasonable, no reason for your petty remarks....

Look, its not the end of the world that he said this. It is just not advisable to say such comments often, can you at least acknowledge that?

As Zyphlin has pointed out multiple times, people who want to attack him will find a way. What you are saying is that he should have commented. It doesn't make him look weak. Ask the Taliban in Pakistan how weak he is. I'm sure these comments didn't make them forget the bombs that were just dropped there.

You're right. Obama taking a couple hours away from the White House to visit a school will undoubtedly get Americans killed. Now was there anything else?

If it makes him look like he's feeling the effects of pressure this soon into his presidency, if it makes it look like he might not be the stalwart type who can handle a long campaign or insurgency, then yes...it will get Americans killed.

Yes, he has a hard job. Yes, he's going to need breaks. But you never show it. You never ever under any circumstances let the public know you are having a tough time. As President, you are no longer just a private citizen. You're no longer just "some guy". Because "some regular guy" would wet their pants and cry in a corner if they had to consider nuking another country. Every action, spoken word, and move you make is watched by the world over. You must look like you're on top of everything. Your vacations are scheduled, you don't give the impression that you "need" them. You have to act like a damn immortal. The first few months are critical to the image your allies and enemies will perceive of the President.

If our allies percieve Obama to be a lightweight, how will the possible trade war develop? If they push for so long maybe he'll cave so lets not give in so easily this time (sorry Wess, the UK caves easy on trade deals). How far does Iran think they can push? You can be the Taleban is wondering just hard far Obama is willing to push an extended campaign in A-stan. Maybe if they hold on for a while longer the Americans will go away.

The President needs to learn to say, "this was a scheduled event" not "we wanted to get away from the White House". You always project as a stalwart individual, not a regular person unless its to pick up polling points with the public (see Gore's strategic campaign wife kiss). This is Public Relations 101.

The President screwed up. Rookie mistake. He just needs to learn the ropes.

Dude...he told some 7 year olds he came to see them cause he wanted a break from the white house....wtf? I'm pretty sure even the crazy Arabs who want to kill Americans take smoke breaks from their jihads from time to time. Seriously. Non-****ing-issue.

An extremely weak thread, obviously who posted it has not thought the ramifications through, so let us suppose that Obama (Who I did not vote for) actually resigned.
Biden takes over the Presidency.
Biden with a history of heart ailments.
I doubt Biden's heart could stand the pressure for long.
His replacement? Pelosi.
I may not have voted for Obama, but I will gladly stand up and state 'Long may he reign as the US President', well at least until 2013.

Not to mention the great protector Bush was talking about how hard his job was yet he managed to keep us safe for 7 years.

Once again you want to nit pick a fight. How pathetic.

Apparently someone pointing out how you turned what essentially looks like a break into something it's not is "nitpicking." Notice how other people have done this as well. I guess you consider everyone who doesn't prescribe to your hyperpartisan viewpoints as "pathetic."

Wrong as usual. If they backed out in the middle of a cut over and told the customer they were overwhelmed, I'd fire them.

But that wasn't what Obama did. Others have pointed this out. Why don't you call them out of alleged "nitpicking?" I'm quite frankly saying what they are saying with the added issue of business practices.

Once again you are arguing a point you made and attributed to me. FAIL.

Uh..isn't that the point? You made an argument. I pointed out how it's faulty and why your argument is wrong. I made the point and I showed how it is valid in your situation. It's called argumentation. Try it sometime.

I'm doing great. Even in this "worst economy"..... Thanks anyway.

Excuse me if I don't believe you. Well, does anyone? :rofl

This is one of the few times I've seen DP seemingly entirely united against premeditated stupidity. I approve.

Actually it is the usual suspects doing there usual thing.

But hey, Im wrong. presidential image is not important....

Note to all future and current fathers :

If you, for ANY reason, ever feel like stepping outside and having a smoke break, car ride, lunch or drive to pick up a case of altoids, this will obviously imply or/and suggest you can not handle the stresses of being a father and main bread earner in your home.

'Image. Image. Image.'

Aren't you late for posting some nonsense about how whitey is racist because they don't like Keyes or some nonsense?

I'll tell you what. If there's a major terrorist attack on American soil while Obama is visiting this school, and he doesn't immediately leave, you can criticize him for this. Deal?

Why would this warrant criticism? Do you have some kind of special insight concerning security protocol for the President during a terrorist attack? I suppose you think he should have shot out of his chair, bolted out the door, hopped onto a rope-ladder hanging from a helicopter, and combat-rolled into the war-room. I mean, it couldn't be because the Secret Service was coordinating an egress plan for the President or securing the perimeter from possible terrorist threats...no, that couldn't have been it at all.

Your expertise in security is astounding. Are you a Navy SEAL or something?

Hmm and people made fun of Bush for going to crawford, reading to childeren, and other small items like this.

odd how the world changes.

Ya not to mention all the hours of golf he racked up. And his staunch promises to quit it in order to meet the demands of those lost. Only to go back on the green again. Big comparison. I disapprove of Super O's so far and even I think this is funny and lame.

Ahahaha. Are you mad that your attempt to make this an issue failed on a 13th grade level?

I remember things getting so demanding in the past that you would have to put EVERYONES demands on hold for just 15 freaking minutes. You go outside. You smoke that cigarette. And then you go back in and deal with it. Sometimes its safer for everyone when it comes to everyone being happy.

Ahahaha. Are you mad that your attempt to make this an issue failed on a 13th grade level?

13th? do not most all schools end at the 12th? then off to college?

But anyway..... even a 6th grader can understand how image is important for the potus.... sorry you are struggling.

Hatuey must have been socially promoted.

Misdirection and obfuscation. Fail.
Are those clowns still arguing over the 30 minutes or whatever that Bush stayed at the school? Like it really made a difference anyway.

Wait, but you're agreeing with Reverend left and right in here.

Doesn't it not matter if it made a difference, doesn't it only matter if its the IMAGE it sends?

I'm confused now what you all are arguing.

Is it image that's important or is it actual affect that it has on things that's important, or is it whether they have a D or an R next to their name that's important.

I know my guess!

Of course they are, and they are smarter for it!

two questions.

1. Is this still a trivial topic or is the topic of a presidential actions, words and there affects on his image both to reporters, people, and foreign nationals matter?

2. If Bush did this, I would say the same thing. Please not to make this a partisan thing. Thanks!

1. I think the TOPIC is legitimate. I think the EXAMPLE given is extremely trivial and worthless.

2. You may have done the same thing (I don't necessarily believe you), but I wasn't addressing you...I was addressing American, who ISN'T doing the same thing.

Yes, you are confused. While it does not affect anything of direct importance, it reflects badly on his image. Whether the president's image matters is mostly a matter of opinion. Since he is directly elected by the people of the US and its sort of a big deal, we feel his image does matter.
