BBC NEWS | Business | Obama wants to avoid 'trade war'

Yikes.. At this day and age a trade war between Europe and the US would be disastrous and carry long term ill effects and possibly be another nail in the already pretty nailed up economic coffin of decline.

Who the hell came up with that silly "buy American" clause anyways? What a fool!

If it results in a trade war, yes it does.
Zomg! I shouldn't buy American sweaters because some european country will get mad and not trade with us! Oh Noez!

**** the EU,who the hell are they to tell us how we can spend our tax payer money? Tax payer money should not be spent on foreign goods and services especially if it is a stimulus plan meant to help American jobs.

It seems in the end democrats don't mind selling out American jobs just like some of the republicans who are globalist/anti-American.

Someone bought and paid for by the unions.

I would rather have Obama listening to unions here in the US than to people who have no loyalty to this country as well as no business what so ever in deciding what the hell goes on in the US.

You should buy whatever the hell you like. I was not referring to individual's actions.

I know its hard to understand, but if the USA enacts trade restrictions (ie Buy American laws), other countries will respond in kind.

That is the attitude to be expected from someone that doesn't understand the importance of trade to the USA economy.

Do you actually have any articles/news stories of the US economy suffering before alot of jobs got outsource and before we got involved in the WTO to support that claim? We seemed to be doing fine before we got involved in WTO.

You might want to read up a little on the the 20s/30s and the actions of the USA government in that period. That led to the GD and it is strikingly similar to what is happening now.

So your saying we entered into the WTO and outsourced alot of our jobs right after the 20s/30s and magically our economy shot up?

Yes. That's what he's saying. He's not talking about protectionism in the 20's/30's or anything.

I don't remember saying anything about the WTO and outsourcing.

To paraphrase someone, 'Those who do not study and understand history are bound to repeat it.' What should one expect from the USA government school system, though.

Unfortunately, it will probably violate government procurement access clauses in the WTO.

YOU'RE RIGHT, THE ECONOMY WAS PERFECT BEFORE WE JOINED THE WTO.

Note: The WTO came into effect in 1995. Just LOOK at the employment numbers PLUNGE from 95 onwards!

Wow, you really seem to understand something about something completely irrelevant to this thread.

You have to consider that trade with Europe is vital to your economy, and that WTO is not just Europe... If you start protectionism, you will be isolated on world trade and sanctioned against, and thus any tiny gain from "buy American" will be overshadowed by HUGE losses by sanctions or lost trade..

I cant believe I am actually having to explain this on a political forum.. Makes me really wonder about the average and such... AGAIN...

There's a reason for that. It's so in time of war, we don't have to count on fools in Europe for our tank and airplane parts. BTW, do you drive an American car?

Except this moronic clause has nothing to do with tank and airplane parts. It's much more general than that.
