Obama has begun discreet talks with Iran, Syria

Obama has begun discreet talks with Iran, Syria - Yahoo! News UK

Officially, Obama's overtures toward both Tehran and Damascus have remained limited.

In an interview broadcast Monday, Obama said the United States would offer arch-foe Iran an extended hand of diplomacy if the Islamic Republic's leaders "unclenched their fist."

Meanwhile, his secretary of state Hillary Clinton warned that the Israeli-Syrian track of the Middle East peace negotiations took a back seat to the Israeli-Palestinian track, especially because of the recent war in Gaza.

However, even before winning the November 4 election, Obama unofficially used what experts call "track two" discussions to approach America's two foes in the region.

This is one campaign promise I wish he would break.

Iran has already balked at Obama. What do you all expect Syria to do? Where is the "compromise" anyway?

Awesome!

I doubt there are any campaign promises you want him to keep, Reverend.

Hmm...

Demand VA Eases Transition To Civilian Life
Ensure Adequate Number Of VA Clinics
Establish Standards For Caring For Brain-Injured Veterans
Fight Job Discrimination Against Guardsmen And Reservists
Fully Fund VA
Improve Care For Various Injuries And Women's Health Through VA
Improve Military's Mental Health Screening And Care
Improve VA Administrative Systems
Pass VA Budget On Time
Update Veterans Affairs Hospital System

For starters and that is just on one subject. There are plenty I wish for him to keep.

But please. Lets not to the "lets attack the poster so we can avoid discussion of Obama" dance. It is played, it is transparent, and it is boring.

What say you about this topic?

What say you about this topic?

Iran's comments are more for its own people than anything else. This is where Bush did not respond appropriately in my mind and one of the reasons I voted for Obama. Diplomacy should not be dropped from the table based on the rhetoric of a president who is up for reelection.

You would rather go to war with these countries? Thank god your side no longer governs.

Nope. But at the same time, I think trying to appease them and seeing the results of that is worse.

Perhaps there is another way.

Do you not know the difference between appeasement and dialogue? Do you have some inside information that we are "trying to appease them", or are you just fishing for hot buttons?

Hmm... I guess we will see then....

All that about "lets avoid debating the poster" and this is the best you can contribute to the topic?

Once again, the liberal mindset of avoidance rears its ugly head.

This thread is not about me chuckles..... :2wave:

anyway. He is more or less right, I used the wrong word. Though I think opening talks was mistake, and given Irans response. I seem to be correct.....

What part of Iran's response leads you to believe opening talks was a mistake(if this is even true).

As I've seen it the only communication between the two countries has been in public speeches so Iran's "response" is a response to Obama being elected and not to any diplomatic correspondence, do you see it differently?.

Oh my bad, Where you in an isolation chamber since the election?

Iran Offers Cool Response To Obama's Overtures : NPR

Public dialogue =/ diplomatic relations. Due to its public nature there are many more reasons for public dialogue than simply diplomacy.

This is a rather ignorant statment.

Do you think the Iranian president improves his chances of reelection by talking strong?

I think the Iranian president is in no trouble, given the mullah's support.

This is a rather ignorant statment.

I think you're displaying your ignorance by disputing this. The diplomatic process is never transparent, we are sometimes given a summary of what transpires but usually just see the result.

I think the Iranian president is in no trouble, given the mullah's support.
We'll see come June.

I think the bottom line is we disagree on the influence of the mullah's and supreme leader. I don't think all of Iran's government are puppets to one man or the council. They have a political spectrum, though narrowly confined by those with true power, which sometimes tests the boundaries. An economic crisis in Iran and a public US offering of diplomacy could go along with towards encouraging revolution or a serious shift in their government. Isolating and demonizing Iran will only unite their people under those in power.

As far as what we should do, I think we should not remove the sanctions until Iran has demonstrated its willingness to change, this should be evident after its June elections (some feel the Iranian people would like leadership that will reciprocate to US offers of diplomacy). An improvement in Iran's economy coupled with relations with the US will go a long ways with its people, should the mullah's and supreme leader intervene it should be glaringly obvious to everyone.

Assad might be more reasonable since he is an Arab Socialist vs Ahemdinijad who is nothing but a raving theocrat. That would be my guess.

I already did.

Caught with your pants down again, eh? That seems to happen a lot.

 I know I know, you want to get into the Good Reverends pants.... Most do. But sorry, I am happily married, and I dig chicks.... But really, you do not need to swoon for the Good Reverend in order to discuss politics with him. No really, I do not require tribute. :2wave:
