As I foretold, Obama has succeeded in splitting the GOP even further. His stimulus package has caused Republican governors to rebel against Capitol Hill Republicans on the stimulus package. The reason is simple: the governors need the money. They’re all broke. Schools, health care mandates, roads, bridges, deficits.

“Hah, Ah’m Governor Barbour, when’s it mah turn to sit on Santa’s knee?”

GOP govs break with party over stimulus - Politics- msnbc.com

This won’t be the last time the governors revolt against the Washington Republicans. Already, governors like Haley Barbour and Rick Perry are fed up with the GOP hardliners on Capitol Hill, and are bragging that they deliver results while their Washington colleagues are flinging custard pies at Democrats. And a number of these guys, and one woman, are going to run for president, so they don't want to be dragged down by the party disasters in Washington. Barbour challenged Pence publicly: once a month we governors want to go to Washington, hear what you D.C. boys are up to, and give you our input. Y’all okay with that?

So far, in fact, the 2012 presidential prospects seem to be governors – Romney, Pawlenty....All of them are playing the same game of have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too, to try to suck up to the pragmatists and hardliners both. The exception: Palin. She’s already been outed as a Nazi. She really, really needs a political makeover. But she’s smart and ambitious, and she’s got plenty of time. Look for her to concoct some sort of “Saint Paul on the road to Damascus” moment – “Hey, let’s build a wind farm, have a meetin’ with that Hamadeeneejad guy about those nuke-ya-lar bombs, spank those nasty CEO’s and rich folks, and give those homos a civil unions bill!”

So the GOP is divided.
Moderate against hardliner.
Neocon versus supply-sider versus culture warrior.
Senate GOP versus House GOP.
Washington Republican versus Republican governors.

And the task of uniting them all, and crafting and launching a winning strategy, is...Steele, a guy whose one major campaign was riddled with chaos, staff firings and resignations, public lies, bogus endorsement announcements, and finally a major butt-whupping by the voters in a heavily black state.

If the Republican party was a stock, I think I’d be selling short Monday.

Basically what this tells me is that these governors are unwilling to cut their overloaded budgets and are on board the Omnibus generational theft pork package the dems want to pass quickly before the people get wise to reading its over 600 pages.

These governors should be cutting all non essential services.

You mean schools, roads, hospitals? Tiffany luxuries and frivolities like that?

Your assertions regarding the state budgets and the stimulus package are silly.

They spend to much on schools. Why is more money needed for failure? Why are hospitals funded by the government, they should be private institutions.

You should read some of the crap in the Omnibus generational theft pork package before making uninformed comments.

The thread shows clearly shows that I know a hell of a lot more about this package than you do. To say nothing of the politics.

I looked back over your post and all I saw was that you pointed out that the governors wanted special funding for their over bloated budgets that they are unwilling to heavily cut.

Why should I support those governors or the pork package when all it will do is fund more unnecessary government programs and pass the cost on to people in their 30's downward. The "we want government to fix everything now" folks know nothing about economics.

So hazaa! Appeals to special interests will cause the economy to turn around.

To summarize:

"Politicians deviate from party line on an issue where they feel it will benefit their constituents to do so."

Oh noes! This is truly the end of the republican party. :(

No, it says you didn't bother to read the article you posted. I only scanned it (I'm in the middle of watching some boring crap on TV, but since I didn't post the article, I'm not going to waste a lot of valuable Saturday afternoon time) and I don't see the massive defection. I do think in the future, you might want to read more than the headline.

The most outspoken critic has been South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has warned for months of a steep spike in inflation and a severely weakened dollar if Obama's plan passed. His state is on track to receive $2.1 billion of the stimulus money; Sanford has not yet said whether he would accept it.

"It's incumbent on me as one of the nation's governors to speak out against what I believe is ultimately incredibly harmful to the economy, to taxpayers and to the worth of the U.S. dollar," Sanford said in an interview. "This plan is a huge mistake and is going to prolong and deepen this recession."

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a former member of the House, said he would accept the stimulus money but would have voted against the bill if he were still in Congress. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, said he wasn't sure whether he would accept the approximately $3 billion his state would be in line for.

"Yes, we need some help and we appreciate the help," Barbour said in an interview. "But I don't know about the details and the strings attached to tell you if I'll take all of it or not."

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who is widely viewed as a potential presidential contender in 2012, said governors have little choice but to accept the relief being offered. "States have to balance their budgets," he said. "So if we're going to go down this path, we are entitled to ask for our share of the money."

"I'm quite concerned about the federal government spending money it doesn't have," Pawlenty said. "We're on an unsustainable path of deficit spending and borrowing."

Making fun of Barber's accent won't make you terribly popular with the southern members here. Calling Palin a nazi makes you an idiot, and suggesting a make-over for her makes you a sexist in my book. Have a nice day.:2wave:

Turning down money offered to the state would be retarded. I don't see how simply accepting it means that he's not a good presidential candidate. I think there are plenty of other reasons why he's not.

I tend to agree with this.

More reason to vote Rick Perry out of office if you ask me.

Aw, Chuck has so little respect for me, that he doesn't think I'm smart enough to catch him cherry-picking his data. You neatly lifted out the quotes only from people who may be running against Obama in four years. Nice try!

It's not necessarily retarded. I think however that it shows that they can't get their states financial house in order without outside welfare.

Show me a governor willing to cut spending without a handout, and thats the future president I would rather have.

You have a habit over glossing over the obvious (btw drop the condescending sarcasm with me). The little pink symbol under my name means I'm a she.

You cherry picked and created false impression of what went on. I'd say you lose this one, Dolly.

Of course you think you won. But the unhappy fact is that all these GOP pooobahs who are whining about Obama's plan are also going to line up to take his money. Which makes them hypocrites.

And I didn't cherry-pick. I just posted the links.

Better luck next time!

I wouldn't have a problem if all he did was accept it. I have a problem with him saying he is against and then accepting it. Guy's a *****.

The partisan once sided rhetoric fuming from you needs some objectivity to it.

I've seen in other posts that you think all waste in this plan is for republicans.
Wake up and look BOTH parties are loading pork in this bill for special interests and you throw in your support because the backers have a D by their name.

Grow up.

I'm tired of the "na na na we control congress and we are always right" crap.

They don't even read the junk that goes into the bills and shout from the hill tops how great their people and policies are.

I think it would be a bad idea to send out $100k checks to every American as a version of a stimulus. And yet, I would cash that check. Does that make me a *****, or am I just dealing realistically in the world that I live in.

You're not a governor who many hope will run for President in four years. If you were you would indeed be a *****.

You and I knock heads a lot, but on this one, we are in total agreement. Socialist Perry is the worst Governor Texas has ever had - Even worse than Ann Richards was, and that is saying a hell of a lot.
