Hill Republican: Stimulus aids illegal immigrants

Hill Republican: Stimulus aids illegal immigrants

The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don't have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.

Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.

Do you think illegal aliens should get bailout money?

Do you think illegal aliens should get bailout money?

Absolutely NOT!

I actually hope the Senate makes some serious changes to this legislation and not just with respect to this issue. According to two, different economists, this bill is not going to create jobs. Sorry, but in my opinion, that is a necessity to any stimulus bill.

The only thing illegals should get is a one way trip back to their home country(unless they committed certain crimes, then they should serve time for those crimes and then get deported).Preferably the farthest place away from the US border.

How many illegal aliens have registered to pay taxes? I could count them on one hand. Republicans are outraged by the possibility of illegal immigrants being aided by the stimulus package, but they had no problem with failed bank executives receiving "bonuses" from taxpayer money. The Republican leadership not only has short memories, they seem to change priorities en masse. It was only last September they urged Congress to approve a massive bailout package with no questions asked, or as Mitch McConnel put it:

“When there’s a fire in your kitchen threatening to burn down your home, you don’t want someone stopping the firefighters on the way and demanding they hand out smoke detectors first or lecturing you about the hazards of keeping paint in the basement,” Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, said in a speech on the Senate floor. “You want them to put out the fire before it burns down your home and everything you’ve saved for your whole life.”

Mr. McConnell added: “The same is true of our current economic situation. We know that there is a serious threat to our economy, and we know that we must take action to try and head off a serious blow to Main Street.”

That bailout passed with bi-partisan support, and now we see that it accomplished little except paying for corporate jets, executive bonuses, trips to the Caribbean and $6,000 toilets. But when the Democrats ask for bi-partisan cooperation in passing a bill that is intended to actually help those who need it, Republicans turn their backs as one.

The Republican's motives are clear, they will not cooperate in any Democratic legislation, and will do whatever they can to encourage the failure of the Obama administration. The President has bent over backward to include Republican participation in this legislation package, he seems to have wasted his time.

Both bailouts are bad. This one is far worse.

How can you say that? The Bush bailout simply handed the treasury over to bank executives and stock manipulators. None of the money is being circulated in the economy. The proposed stimulus package is designed to put money into the hands of people who will spend it.

895 billion is roughly a check for 7 grand in every americans pocket.

Where is my 7 grand?

the government can not spend you way out of a recession.

you know Wall Street gave out bonuses equivalent to about the amount given out in 2004 this year.

When the DOW was about 10k.

Just to put this in perspective.

No, but if they're paying taxes I can't say that I mind them getting a tax credit all that much

Exactly. If anything, this could act as an incentive for more illegal immigrants to get registered in the system.

What's the number of people employed on Wall Street this year as compared to 2004?

Also, their bonuses fell 44% from last year, despite the stock market only falling 34%. Hopefully this bailout will include that extra 10% that these people are owed.

You clearly read the same NYT article I did. Remember the bit where a third said the they should have gotten more?

A bunch of them probably should have.

All of this uproar stems from the fact that wall street just has a tradition of paying low base salaries and large bonuses to make up for it. They're pissed off about this because they considered them to be one and the same, as they were for so long. If they were paid the majority of their compensation in base salary, nobody would give a **** and this would be a total non-issue.

If you worked 3000 hours a year for a base salary of 60k and a bonus of 100k, it shouldn't be looked at differently than someone working 3000 hours a year for a base of 155k and a bonus of 5k. The only difference this year is that the first set of people working 3000 hours a year are getting 60k and then 50k.

I'd be pissed too.

I think they should all be taken out back and shot.

Actually **** that.

They should be taken out front, so everyone can see, and shot.

Because you think they actually did something wrong, or because they're ibankers and on general principle don't really deserve to exist?

I may be with you on this, depending on your answer.

Well your right they didn't really do anything wrong, they just operated logically within the system as we've allowed them to. So I guess the system should be taken out and shot.

However I think all of this proves pretty well that what's good for GE is NOT good for America.

And this was worded and voted on by the largely democratic Congress. But somehow it's "Bush's bailout"? If checks and balances needed to be put into place to prevent what happened, what branch of our government is responsible for that? I'll give you one guess.

You're off to a rough start on this forum kid.

Wow, and here in Taiwan, there was controversy about giving FOREIGN SPOUSES with Alien Resident Certificates the consumer vouchers handed out earlier this month.

Of course Illegals should NOT get the rebates.

Hehe. No, but there's nothing we can do to stop it.
It's Globalization. Resistance is futile, unless you have
your own army. Congress serves them, not us.

George Friedman, who was recently on the Medved show,
says that in this century America will be inviting Mexicans
to come here in his book "The Next 100 Years". He should
know what's planned.
