Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On ... Salt

Singer Jimmy Buffett will never find his "lost shaker of salt" in New York City or any other place in the country if Mayor Michael Bloomberg has his way. The mayor is waging a war on salt and he wants food manufacturers and restaurants to join his army or else.

It's ironic that the war on salt began on the very day the city was spreading tons of it on the streets to fight a snow storm, but in Bloomberg's view there is good salt and bad salt.

"I don't think it's that big a deal to look on the label, check the packaging and make the decision for yourself rather than have Bloomberg or whoever mandate what it is people should or shouldn't eat," said Paul Hope of Upper West Side.

"Nanny state. We don't need any more nanny state people can take care of themselves. We don't need the government to take care of us," said Patrick Keenan of Hell's Kitchen.

The city says it doesn't want to eliminate salt in food, just go back to the levels found during the 1970s.

Thomas Frieden, the city's health commissioner, said he wants manufacturers and restaurants to join the war on salt voluntarily. If they don't, the city could pass legislation making it the law.

Well the reason there is so much salt in the food is because you forced the chefs to stop using trans fats! They have to do something to make the food taste good.

Very few people NEED to cut back on salt, either due to medical issues, or just plain going nuts with the salt shaker for no good reason. I can remember the fear mongers blaming butter for health issues, then eggs, only to find out later that reasonable consumption of both are not unhealthy.
I have 2 eggs fried in butter nearly every morning, with ham or suasage, and my choleterol numbers are very good. If the numbers were NOT good, I would consider cutting back. Likewise with salt, not that I use much of that anyway, but if I had high blood pressure, I would cut back.
If it don't make you sick, you should be able to consume all you want....

My wife has LOW blood pressure and mine is on the low end of normal, and we both consume respectable amounts of sodium (the local diet is relatively sodium rich). This is NOT something for Mayor Bloomies to get himself involved with. Each individual should be aware of his/her blood pressure and adjust his/her own diet accordingly.

What a hilariously misleading article. By "Mayor Bloomberg Declares War on Salt," they actually mean "City's Health Commissioner Points out that People Eat Way Too Much Damn Salt and Says We Should Cut Back."
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

same here, mine is low, and hers is too low at times. any pain and she tends to pass out on the spot...she scared the crap out of me once doing that... she even went into convulsions just from a pinched nerve while sitting on the bed putting on panty hose. her eyes were wide open. looking right at me, but essentially unconscious. Once I put her on the floor and the nerve got unpinched, she came out of it. Paramedices were there by then, though. Now that we know, it isn't as scary, but fair warning for those whose BP runs very low. Pain drives it lower for some people...
